I feel the most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to make them patient, let them know that it is okay to make mistakes and encourage them to continue to learn and practice in order to master a skill. A can-do attitude is the most important thing a tutor can teach. I myself used to learn concepts in a way that were not…

The most important thing a physics tutor can do for a student is to be open to their teaching methods. If a student doesn't understand a concept from their previously used method, the tutors should try and approach it from a different angle instead of teaching it using the same way. For example, I once spent half a lesson teaching a concept…

Give them tools to increase their confidence! Have an appreciation for their unique learning style. Every child learns differently and is passionate about learning different things. By far the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make sure they have a strong base knowledge of the subject by explaining and approaching ideas in ways that they understand and can use practically. Sarah McGregor, Carnegie

Inside CarnegieTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Lucas worked on measurement conversions between units and explored different types of angles using visual examples.

In Year 9, Sarah practised expanding and simplifying algebraic equations to solve for "x," along with adding terms involving variables and numbers.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Aiden focused on quadratic equations—both solving them and reviewing their graphical representations as parabolas—in preparation for an upcoming quiz.

Recent Challenges

Homework was incomplete for a Year 7 student, which limited progress in consolidating division and multiplication skills—one lesson note simply read, "Homework was incomplete."

In Year 9 algebra, confusion with equation signs persisted when working through substitution tasks; as one tutor observed, "Alex is slightly confused by the sign while substituting value in the equation," leading to repeated errors during practice.

A senior student tackling probability scenarios sometimes hesitated to start multi-step problems, pausing at worded questions and requiring extra prompts to extract relevant information before attempting solutions. This often meant less time spent on building fluency and confidence within sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Carnegie tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with matrix multiplication; after revisiting earlier lessons, she now attempts the harder two-matrix problems without waiting for help.

Another high school student has gone from struggling with algebraic manipulation to quickly solving for unknowns—her speed and accuracy have noticeably improved during problem sets.

In primary, one learner who often guessed answers now takes time to double-check fractions before responding out loud. Last session, he completed every question on his own and asked for an extra challenge at the end.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Aslinn is currently travelling along well. We have valued Jess's contribution to her reaching her goals in maths. If Aslinn needs further assistance we will have no hesitations in using your service.

My daughter progressed so well with the support of your tutor, Eliran and we think she is ready to work independently. Thank you for providing a great educational service. We will keep you in mind if we need your support for the future.

Gabriele loves Monica and I will be looking at upping his tutorials to once a week after term 3. We are very happy. I have recommended your service to 4 of the parents of children in Gabriele's class. Unfortunately there has been a massive and noticeable drop in the teaching, motivation, and comprehension of mathematics for our class, but you have helped us immensely and I have passed this information on. Monica is a dream, and understands my son very well, and they have bonded quite quickly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Carnegie Primary School.
