Inside Cedar ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex worked on displaying data using histograms and identified areas of difficulty from last semester for targeted review.

For Year 10, revision focused on trigonometry, including applying formulas to solve exam-style problems. Another Year 10 student reviewed standard deviation by practicing manual calculations with tables and calculators, then explored real-life application through a mini-assignment analysing fuel consumption and travel efficiency.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student recently missed passing a test due to "small errors—labelling units and graphs," as well as uncertainty using the calculator for standard deviation.

In Year 10, one learner was "unable to complete the practice test under test conditions" and often relied on guidance rather than independent strategies, especially with worded problems.

Meanwhile, in Year 8, untidy equation formatting made it hard to spot mistakes when isolating variables; "needs to format/structure her equations better," noted the tutor.

In primary years, incomplete homework and skipped times table exercises left calculation skills shaky heading into new topics.

Recent Achievements

In Year 11, Diali has started spotting her own errors in practice exams—something she used to miss—which shows she's taking more ownership of her learning and double-checking her work without prompting.

Meanwhile, Alex (Year 8) was able to independently contribute assumptions for a scatterplot assignment after struggling to connect theory to application before; she even followed all the steps herself this time.

One younger student finally finished their fractions homework on their own, working step by step instead of skipping problems they found tricky.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with both Seth's tutor Robert and his progress! He is actually looking forward to starting up again when school goes back :)

All is good Athena really likes Fatemeh, and is enjoying the tutoring. Best regards

Matthew has been extremely happy with the tutoring Hannah has provided, and received an A on his most recent Maths test this week.  Hannah is always very punctual and explains things very clearly to Matthew, and in particular has encouraged him to show his working out, which contributed toward him receiving more marks on his recent test than he would have otherwise received. Matthew has already asked if Hannah can continue to tutor him next year!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Jimboomba Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Woodhill State School.
