I consider the most important thing a tutor can for a student is to lead them on a path so that they might discover the answer themselves, and not give them the answer straight out. As a trained facilitator, I believe I would be able to identify my student's needs and work with them to fulfill those needs. I also have a proficiency in written…

Firstly, being patient and establishing a safe and positive learning environment, where asking questions of doubt and/or clarification, and making room for errors as a mean to learn and approach new concepts helps to build a student's confidence especially when it comes to making mistakes. Being adaptable and a great listener and observer is…

I believe an important role a tutor has is not only easing a student's fears about a subject (in particular Mathematics), but encouraging them when the student feels disheartened over task loads or low grades. I also believe tutors must help students develop healthy self-study habits that encourage them to try solving problems themselves before…

Inside Chandlers HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Charlotte worked on using the sine and cosine rules to solve triangle problems and practised applying trigonometric ratios for unknown sides.

Year 10 student Mia focused on quadratic equations, including finding x- and y-intercepts in algebraic expressions, and revised surds simplification techniques.

For Year 11, Liam completed an assignment exploring mortgages and interest rates, then analysed how compound interest and appreciation affect loan repayments over time.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Science, skipping units and not showing all working in experiments led to confusion when interpreting results—she forgot to write units for several measurements, making the data hard to compare.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student's research project stalled because referencing wasn't used to back up claims, leaving findings unsupported.

In Year 9 Maths, working out was sometimes omitted during factorisation questions; this made it tough to pinpoint calculation slips.

A senior English student struggled with sentence structure and linking ideas smoothly in essays, which caused arguments to feel disjointed despite strong content knowledge.

Recent Achievements

A Chandlers Hill tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who'd struggled to link equations and their graphs now independently explains how changing an equation shifts its graph—something that used to trip her up.

In Year 9 English, one student has started asking for feedback on essays before submitting them, instead of just handing in drafts without review; this shift is helping him catch structure issues early.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who often hesitated during class discussions contributed her own ideas about improving experiments in science last week, speaking up without prompting from the tutor.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

So far so good with Stephen ... Charlie has really taken to him and we are very happy with him and the work he has done so far.

Carla is very happy with Aisling. We are gratefull that she is able to assist us.

Alec is really enjoying his sessions with Matt. He finds Matt funny and easy to get along with. Alec tells me he has already started learning things he didn't know. We are very happy so far with Matt.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Aberfoyle Park (The Hub) Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Craigburn Primary School.
