Finding or creating extra resources in their spare time tailored to the student which in turn will help the student understand the topic in a way which makes sense to them. Have a deep understanding to be able to answer any questions as well as explain topics in a slightly different way. Be extremely passionate about the subject as if the lesson is boring it doesn't matter how knowledgable the tutor is. Develop interesting questions and material that will consolidate and extend students in order to strengthen their…

Buildings a student's confidence through providing positive reinforcement, encouragement and celebrating success is one of the most important things a maths tutor can do for their students. Furthermore, a tutor should encourage critical thinking and problem solving skills, to really challenge their students and promote the development of these…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student are to understand their needs, create a custom study plan, and keep them motivated. It's essential to know what each student is good at and what they find challenging. By making a unique study plan that moves at a pace that's right for them, students can learn better without…

I am opinion I reckon the most important is for the student to know their true passion in knowledge. Many of us are forced to be good at something and spend thousands of hours of hard work. Everyone could achieve a reasonably high score if they had spent the effort in it, given they were not demotivated during the process. I believe it is most…

A tutor should be able to understand the learning process of their student to supply their best teaching. A tutor should also be able to make learning enjoyable for the student to make it so that they don't see tutoring in a negative way and can look forward to their learning. In fact, I grew up having a few tutors but found that they all lacked one thing - constant support. I feel a maths tutor should always make themselves available to assist their students outside of class hours. I also feel that tutors should never appear intimidating to their students. I am the lead altar server at my church, and all current…

Be a good listener and open-minded to gain clarity on the student’s thoughts and feelings. This gives them an opportunity to elaborate on the topic. Empathy. It is being able to relate to students who struggle and find a way that works for them, not necessarily a way that only works for me. We are helping students achieve their…

I think the most important thing to do as a maths tutor is to amend the teaching style for different students. Motivation was one of the things that I and many of my peers struggled with, and so, the last thing I want is for my student to not be engaged in the content. One way to do this to include connections to the student's interests. In…

There are things taught at school that are not always assimilated by some of the students. This is because in school, they follow a standard setting or style of teaching which is not applicable for everyone but only for a certain percentage or average. Tutors are built for this specific reason. Tutors customise and plan a specific program for a…

Tutors should be able to build independence and confidence in the student, allowing them to improve their problem solving skills and gain new approaches or strategies to learning. My strengths are that I can easily adapt to a student\'s needs, by changing my approach to the topic either by simplifying it further or bringing in other concepts to…

Inside ChelseaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ella focused on working with fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) as well as solving equations involving a few extra steps.

Year 10 student Max tackled methods for factorising quadratics and was introduced to logarithms through guided practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jack worked on rules for differentiating polynomials and applied these skills to find tangent and normal lines using graphs of derivatives.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student working through non-routine quadratic and function problems often avoided showing full working, especially when identifying which method of factorising quadratics is required for which question—as one tutor noted, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to confusion when revisiting solutions.

In Year 8 algebra sessions, messy written work made it difficult to check calculations or spot arithmetic slips.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student regularly forgot to bring key materials for subtraction practice; this meant time was lost setting up before starting any sums.

Recent Achievements

One Chelsea tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to struggle with worded problems now quickly converting scenarios into equations and even drawing diagrams without prompting.

In a recent high school session, a Year 11 student who'd hesitated with polynomial long division was able to perform it smoothly and then independently identify key points of cubics in point of inflection form.

Meanwhile, one younger primary learner, Asha, surprised her tutor by solving addition problems in her head much faster than before—she finished her work quickly and correctly for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Patterson Lakes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakwood School-Oakwood School VCAL Campus.
