I believe the main thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the subject they have been asked help for, and do it well, so that the student can get through the subject at school to the best of their ability. In addition, although it isn't as necessary, I believe that a good tutor should encourage a student who is unable to handle the subject,…

I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

One of the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is that let him know that this is also a learning experience for you and both of us in the end learn something out of it. Another important thing that tutor should do for a student is look for interesting ways to teach topics to help retain their attention on the topics. My…

I believe that a tutor must be able to provide the students with what they need. This means assessing the student's abilities and determining key weaknesses. Since not all students are the same, a successful tutor must be able to decide strategies that are suited for each individual student. I am adaptable and resourceful, so I can adjust myself…

The most crucial things a tutor can do for a student are to develop a growth attitude and personalise the learning process. As a tutor, I can help students understand complex subjects by customising support and adjusting to each student's learning style. Students who are encouraged to see obstacles as chances for personal development are more…

Creating a safe and comfortable learning environment for a student is one important aspect of effective tutoring. The private setting is what sets apart tutoring and classroom learning. So much of learning is based on relationships, communication styles, understanding a student's background and their academic, social, and emotional growths which…

The most important thing a tutor can provide to a student is their time. It goes without saying that all children are different and learn through alternative ways/modes. Patience, perseverance and continual tailored support from a tutor is crucial in allowing a student to understand certain concepts. By having a tutor that is continually readily…

The most important thing is being able to connect with the children and spark curiosity about the subjects in their minds. As them being excited to learn makes them more receptive to learn more complex topics with relative ease. My strengths are approaching problems with different perspectives and focusing on the logic and structure of the…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to learn with the students. In my experience, students are much more likely to engage with the lessons and motivated to excel if they feel that they are learning together with the tutor. My key strengths as a tutor are: 1. I excel at explaining complex concepts in an easy-to-understand…

Hence, they must cater to one's level of academic proficiency, their learning weaknesses and holes in education to provide a tangible improvement in grades. I think the most important things a tutor can do is to provide academic guidance, human connection, and motivation and drive interest of the student towards the subject. The combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Creativity and enthusiasm for teaching. Ability to explain…

If I can make a student feel at ease through the process of learning and eventually remove the stigma of some subjects being ‘too hard’. Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. It's very important for a tutor to listen a student's worry points and problems and guide him accordingly to overcome them without breaking his confidence. It's necessary to be a good mentor and help students just not academically but advice them on any…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. The most important thing is to be a tutor if she can develop these abilities in his student. 1. why they are studying a particular subject? 2. How they can understand the laws of nature by doing science. 3. How they can develop the ability to ask questions? 4. How they can find the right answers to their questions. 5. Science is not a burden…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. Inside ChiswickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Rose practiced column multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers, then began exploring long division and the difference between volume and capacity using real-world examples.

In Year 9, Lachlan worked through algebra introduction topics including solving equations from a self-chosen booklet, alongside converting between 12- and 24-hour time formats.

For Year 11, Sophie focused on surface area and composite shapes before tackling past exam questions on financial mathematics and error in measurement to consolidate her understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student hesitated to distinguish between explanation and evidence when reading a challenging text, leading to slower comprehension and more time spent clarifying instructions.

A Year 11 Standard Maths student repeatedly left revision work incomplete—"he missed this content back in term 1 and it's now the start of term 3"—which meant foundational algebra gaps lingered into exam prep.

Another senior student often crammed working onto one page without clear steps, making it harder to trace errors or benefit from tutor feedback during complex geometry questions. In these moments, opportunities for understanding were lost amid scattered notes or half-finished attempts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Chiswick recently noticed some encouraging shifts across different year levels. One high school student, after previously relying heavily on set rules for each maths topic, began to tackle unfamiliar problems independently by piecing together concepts himself—something he'd hesitated to do before.

Another older student who used to avoid asking questions is now actively seeking clarification during sessions, making sure he understands each step rather than just nodding along.

In a primary session, a younger learner who often rushed through addition has started double-checking her answers independently and was able to catch and fix her own mistakes in the latest speed test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
