Making learning easy and creating an atmosphere for students to learn through experience, is very important to me. Math seems to be a challenging topic however, creating lots of simple daily examples, can help students to learn in a creative way. I am patient and I can handle difficult situations. I have worked with families in crisis and can…

The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. Finding the right teaching style for that kid and teaching as such will make the kid more involved into the subject and makes learning fun. I am a very good observer and an active listener. I make sure I tend…

The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

I think one of the most improtant things is to be a good listener and have a good understanding with your student so that he/she can freely ask questions or share any problems they are facing. Being honest with the student also plays a very important role as they can know you cant alwyas be perfect and its okay to make mistakes! I can assess the…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, create a safe space for asking questions, and explain concepts in a way that actually makes sense to them. A tutor should be patient, encouraging, and adaptable, while also helping students develop good study habits and independent learning skills so they…

When being a tutor, I consider the most important thing is not to provide the students with the answer but to guide them through the difficulties of learning. As their predecessor and mentor, I have the responsibility of taking their hands and lead them towards the right path, lighting up the passion of learning in them through my engagement.…

To expose someone to a subject in a manner that is encouraging and complete. There are many people who were irresponsibly exposed to subjects as rigorous as computer science and mathematics, as a consequence of which they start to believe that the subject is impossible, which with the little experience I have, I have never found to be the case. A…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listening to them to truly understand what their needs and goals are. I also think it is important for a tutor to establish a link with the student, to make the lesson less "formal" and more enjoyable for the student as he/she would learn better if the environment is less stressful. As I am…

I think as a tutor, most important thing is to helping them developing their study patterns so they can utilise it when they are graduated from high school. I think most importantly a tutor should be able to engage students more in learning through group/individual activities to keep them going and learning with the entire class. Rather than just explaining things or delivering the lecture. It is important to check their understanding of the topic being explained or information being provided. This…

One of the most crucial things, which a tutor can do to benefit a student is to create a learning space that has a good atmosphere with support and understanding. the most important things that a tutor can do is enhancing creativities, and building logic to solve the problem. because sometimes, a tutor can improve students' grade but by teaching tricks to solve math problem, not by enhancing creativities. trying to improve solving problem logic and increase creativities can take longer time but once…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire a student to love what they are studying and enjoy the experience of learning. Excellence will surely follow after. The most important thing a tutor can do is to ignite a student's curiosity and passion for learning. When a student finds joy in the process, success naturally follows. The most important thing by far, especially that I have found over the years, is to have a presence that shows genuine concern for the student's understanding. I believe tutors bear much more of a responsibility than they let on. In my experience, the way a tutor approaches a problem with a student, no matter how trivial, can mean the difference…

Inside ChiswickTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Rose practiced column multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers, then began exploring long division and the difference between volume and capacity using real-world examples.

In Year 9, Lachlan worked through algebra introduction topics including solving equations from a self-chosen booklet, alongside converting between 12- and 24-hour time formats.

For Year 11, Sophie focused on surface area and composite shapes before tackling past exam questions on financial mathematics and error in measurement to consolidate her understanding ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student hesitated to distinguish between explanation and evidence when reading a challenging text, leading to slower comprehension and more time spent clarifying instructions.

A Year 11 Standard Maths student repeatedly left revision work incomplete—"he missed this content back in term 1 and it's now the start of term 3"—which meant foundational algebra gaps lingered into exam prep.

Another senior student often crammed working onto one page without clear steps, making it harder to trace errors or benefit from tutor feedback during complex geometry questions. In these moments, opportunities for understanding were lost amid scattered notes or half-finished attempts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Chiswick recently noticed some encouraging shifts across different year levels. One high school student, after previously relying heavily on set rules for each maths topic, began to tackle unfamiliar problems independently by piecing together concepts himself—something he'd hesitated to do before.

Another older student who used to avoid asking questions is now actively seeking clarification during sessions, making sure he understands each step rather than just nodding along.

In a primary session, a younger learner who often rushed through addition has started double-checking her answers independently and was able to catch and fix her own mistakes in the latest speed test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Abbotsford Public School.
