I have an ATAR of 99.6. I also taught Y12 Mathematical Methods as a private tutor before. I am confidant that I can explain difficult concepts and answer…

The most important things a tutor can do are to provide clarity, encouragement, and structure. A tutor should simplify complex ideas, guide students through problems step by step, and foster a positive learning environment where questions are always welcome. Beyond teaching content, a tutor should help students develop problem-solving strategies,…

The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The different mindsets in the class should be brought together and set in a pathway where they get excited about learning something new every…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is paying attention. By doing so, a tutor can clearly identify where they are struggling, and then provided catered guidance as a response to that. It can also pinpoint a student's specific learning style, allowing further tailoring of sessions to mimic that. Further, it generally just shows the…

I think as a tutor, it is most important to have patience especially when teaching young bright minds. It is also important to make sure that your students are comfortable so that they can benefit from your teaching. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. This is not usually done in classes as teachers have a large number of students and cannot always pitch their lessons at the right level for everybody. A tutor,on the other hand, who works with a small group of students, can…

The most prominent thing is to work according to the level of child. For example, some students love to study through animations and some by real world examples and also some by doing practicals or activities. Hence; its the duty of a tutor to find the way of teaching that interacts a student and make it interesting for a child to explore that…

A tutor needs to be able to clearly communicate with the student with their studies. A tutor needs to be extremely patient and understanding, the student needs you to help take all of that away for them. Making your student feel comfortable enough that they can ask you the same question multiple times without being made to feel silly or inadequate. Learning to adapt on the spot to meet each students needs is also extremely…

It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. Even if they do not wish to pursue the field in the future, understanding the concepts will give them the confidence to approach all…

Inside ClarindaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised addition and subtraction with and without regrouping using worded problems, and explored multiplication through different strategies including times tables.

In Year 9, Jasmine focused on trigonometric ratios to solve for missing sides or angles in triangles, making use of calculator techniques and applying these skills to 2D geometry problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Michael worked through polynomial long division and the remainder/factor theorem, then applied these methods to solve cubic equations.

Recent Challenges

During a Year 3 reading session, one student struggled to stay focused, attempting to juggle multiple books at once and joking instead of engaging with the text—making it hard to complete any story meaningfully.

In Year 10 Maths, "she left her notes at school again and was forced to flip through pages of digital files," which slowed problem-solving in finance questions and increased confusion over formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student repeatedly missed bringing her CAS calculator home, limiting her ability to practice data entry and graphing between sessions.

Missed homework and disorganized materials kept resurfacing as stumbling blocks across grades.

Recent Achievements

A Clarinda tutor noticed that a Year 3 student, Julian, made a big leap in reading—he now sounds out unfamiliar words by himself instead of skipping them.

In high school maths, Jaxon (Year 10) started taking his own notes and simplifying tricky content, which helped him remember key concepts from earlier sessions—previously he'd forget details week to week.

Another high school win: after struggling with statistics tests before, one student scored 86 on her latest assessment and was able to explain her working without prompting, showing much more independence than at the start of tutoring.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Andrew's School.
