The most important thing I can do for a student is to permanently change the outlook a student has on a subject. If my students can go from viewing e.g. maths as a boring and tedious subject to viewing it as fun and rewarding, I'm succeeding in my mission as a tutor. I am good at making personal connections and introducing novel ways to approach…

Help them with their growth as an overall human being, not just a student. This can be done by personally connecting with the student, not becoming just their teacher but someone they can talk to and rely on. I have a very deep understanding of what it takes to succeed in a subject. I know how to study for it, and what knowledge is required to…

I consider patience to be the most important quality a tutor can have for a student. I believe a tutor should guide rather than give the answers straight away. A tutor should be able to set a good example and inspire motivation. I have always enjoyed mathematics and teaching mathematics. I studied math B (standard level mathematics) and math C…

The paramount duty of a tutor is to elucidate complex concepts or ideas in a manner that ensures every student can readily grasp the topic at hand. In addition to that, a tutor should be proficient in addressing a wide array of questions comprehensively. When considering my strengths as a tutor, two key attributes stand out. Firstly, I've…

I think being able to tailr your teaching style to each student is the most important thing. Every student learns in a different way and at a different pace so its crucial for their success that as a tutor, we can identify what works best for the student and how we can use this to maximise their learning capacity so that it provides an advantage…

The biggest things a student can have their tutor do are to make the student feel assured, adapt their learning style to the student's, and demystify hard concepts. A student was struggling with algebra and felt discouraged. My goal was to help him understand the concepts and build their confidence. So, I broke down the problems into simple…

A tutor should connect with a student and approach problems in a way best for the student rather than what a tutor is more familiar with. With many problems, there are a variety of ways to go about it. The ability to adapt for the student to best understand it is important. I believe that I am good at describing solutions in a variety of ways to…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is build rapport with them and reassure them about their math concerns. This helps the tutor better understand the student's thinking and therefore reword themselves in a way that the student will better understand. I also believe that it is important for a tutor to first explain the…

Deliver content in a way that is engaging, and resolves each student's academic problems. Additionally, a tutor should be able to make their students understand that developing good learning habits is more important than simply achieving results as that would improve their thinking process which would help them for the rest of their lives. Be able to understand that not every student is the same. Everyone's unique and their learning styles are different, so approaching every student with the same method to teach is not a good idea. Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lucy worked through surface area and volume calculations in measurement, followed by trigonometry basics using visual aids.

For Year 10, Daniel focused on mastering linear equations and interpreting univariate data sets, with practice constructing and analysing graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah concentrated on bivariate data analysis and time series interpretation, applying these skills to real-world scenarios in her textbook exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, a student left notes at school and relied on scattered digital files during finance revision; as the tutor observed, "he was flipping through pages to find a particular formula," which slowed progress and caused confusion with recurrence relations.

For VCE Maths Methods, another student frequently entered incorrect data into the CAS calculator or forgot to bring it home for practice, leading to incomplete preparation for graphing tasks.

Meanwhile, in Year 3 English, unclear punctuation and skipping question instructions—such as colouring more items than asked—created repeated misunderstandings mid-lesson that disrupted focus and accuracy.

Recent Achievements

One Clayton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who now takes the lead in making clear, simplified notes during sessions—something he rarely attempted before—which has helped him remember key trigonometry tips from previous lessons.

In a senior session, another student tackled her Statistics test with noticeably more confidence, scoring 86 after consistently struggling on earlier assessments and using her calculator skills much more independently this time.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised his tutor by speaking up to ask for extra explanations about converting length units, rather than waiting passively as he had done at first.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's School.
