The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence they need to sit an exam and believe that they have the skills required to answer the questions in front of them. I have had a number of students come to me with issues relating to this, along the lines of 'I just had no idea what to do.' I aim to equip my students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them understand the concepts being taught. The right answer for a particular question isn't as important as getting the fundamentals right so they can be applied in all circumstances. My strengths would include: I truly understand what I'm trying to teach them and in turn I can explain…

I think that the tutor acts as a mentor for the student. In this role, the tutor should encourage the students to think critically in order to find answers to their questions. By providing the means to discover the answers for themselves, the tutor ensures that the student does not merely address the 'what' of the question but is also able to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be scrupulously honest and focused. I believe that a tutor should approach teaching in a logical and objective way, which makes use of broad principles in order to allow retention and understanding. Honestly, I believe education is the backbone of a country. A good tutor’s impact on a student is far greater than anyone would ever realise. It empowers a student to build confidence, develops the ability to analyse critical problems and brings out the best solution. Their personalities develop during this time which stays forever. A tutor is…

Inside ClaytonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia focused on VCE Biology Unit 3 topics, including nucleic acids and DNA/RNA manipulation processes like transcription and translation, working through sample exam questions for deeper understanding.

Year 9 student Thomas practiced solving equations involving powers and multiple variables in algebra, alongside word problems to reinforce these skills.

For a younger learner in Year 6, lessons covered measurement conversions between centimeters and meters as well as tackling multi-step worded questions that combined addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Biology student hesitated when differentiating between nucleic acids and amino acids, particularly during gene regulation discussions; as noted, "needs a little more support with the details of transcription."

In Year 9 Mathematics, persistent self-doubt was evident: despite understanding indices rules when prompted, she hesitated to apply them independently and made calculation errors.

For a Year 4 student, reluctance to speak up—"she stays quiet instead of telling me she doesn't know how to do the question or because she is afraid to get it wrong"—meant confusion lingered in multi-step word problems. In these moments, uncertainty led to missed opportunities for feedback and growth.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Clayton recently noticed a big shift for one Year 10 student who now answers exam questions unaided—something she used to depend on heavily.

In another session, a high schooler confidently explained the differences between DNA and RNA and handled tricky protein structure questions that had stumped her before.

Meanwhile, a younger student who'd been hesitant about reading aloud started making more attempts during lessons, moving from barely trying to giving it a real go.

One session ended with the student independently working through all her assigned maths problems after just a couple of practice runs together, showing true independent problem-solving.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

El-Abed is doing s great job. El-Abed has managed to get my daughter, Faith, to agree to a 90min session weekly which should work well as she has some work to do.

Sophie is already getting alot out of her tutoring. Jessica is fantastic and has quickly got to know what Sophie needs. We will definately be staying.

Michael came yesterday & is quite a competent & friendly boy whom Zoe worked quite well with.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clayton Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like John Monash Science School.
