Look at a problem from various perspectives. Try and understand where the student is coming from and how they approach a problem/ situation so that you do act in a condesending way and in turn make you seem not approachable. I am a great leader. I am appraochable and want every child to be successful. Maybe one day they will be able to pass their…

The tutor can assist students with especific exercises or topics, but the most important thing a tutor can do is to assist students in developing their own potential. In that way, students will be able to learn how to approach their studies better, and become more confident. I am a very good listener, and also very good at exploring different…

To help them master concepts in the subject instead of route learning. Tutors and students must also break the ice between them in order to teach efficiently. Lastly, tutors should provide some challenging questions for students to help them in their exams. I have past experience helping students with problems they face with their homeworks and I…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, involve being extremely knowledgeable about the subject material and knowing the right way to teach it. A tutor may have achieved extremely good marks, but if he has not planned beforehand, and does not know how to convey his knowledge to the student, he may not be the best…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them to feel confident with the task in front of them. An effective tutor will break down the concept, slowly explaining this to the student, making sure they are following each step along the way. Once the student has grasped the concept and feel confident with it, they will be…

Being patient and guide them through how they should solve their problems instead of forcing only one way to them. Give them examples on how things should be with the aid of diagrams to picture the problem to them and make them think of the solution instead of blindly giving them answers. I am a persevered and patient person. I will be patient and…

Instill interest in a subject. Without a doubt. A student can get by doing homework with friends and using online tools to complete exercises that are more challenging but really only a dedicated tutor will be able to ignite interest in a student for a subject they'd previously been struggling with. When a student sees another young person be very…

I believe that building self confidence for the student is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. This is because it allows the tutee to be more outspoken with their thoughts and be understand that mistakes can be made and that will result in learning from it. Students with a low confidence level in their academics tend to…

I consider it important that tutors to personalise learning experiences for student. Every student has different approaches to learning and given that tutors have more flexibility to work with students outside their classroom, it's important that tutors account for students' various learning needs. For example, providing diagrams for students who…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain how to solve problems in several different ways, particularly if a student is struggling to understand how to solve it the first time. These problem solving skills will help them in other areas as well, such as chemistry and physics. My main strength as a tutor…

Being patient to students and being able to think in different ways. Patience is essential for us tutors as students may require us to explain a question several times in order to fully comprehend. Yet in some other cases we need to be able to think in different ways when solving a problem as students may not get the way that we usually solve a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student for mi consideration would be listening to my students and get to know them in order to adjust and assess my strategy and way of teaching as a tutor, and in that way the tutor can be the most creative as it can, giving hints and techniques to students on how to think by themselves, question…

Inside CollingwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 James explored addition and subtraction strategies before using visual models to deepen understanding of multiplication.

In Year 9, Maryam practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, then applied these skills to real-world worded problems.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on graphing sine, cosine, and tangent functions, learning how to use the unit circle and exact value triangles for trigonometric calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for VCE exams struggled to select the right formula without relying on notes—"she needed help deciding which method fit each scenario."

In Year 9, a student's algebra working was hard to follow; lines were crowded and steps not set out, leading to confusion when checking answers.

A Year 7 learner avoided writing working for fraction problems, hesitating to attempt questions unless sure of the process.

Meanwhile, in upper primary, incomplete homework left gaps in measurement skills and worded questions went unanswered. The result: confidence dipped after setbacks and valuable revision time was spent relearning missed basics.

Recent Achievements

One Collingwood tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student, Celeste, who now tackles trigonometric problems independently after previously needing lots of prompting—she worked through all the [0, 2π] domain questions with barely any hints.

Another high school student, Maryam, who used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, managed to solve them using both methods without waiting for step-by-step guidance.

In primary sessions, James (Year 3) started speaking up when unsure about new times tables instead of guessing quietly; last lesson he tried the three times table aloud and checked his answers himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collingwood College-Collingwood Alternative School.
