The important things are giving them clear directions and encouraging them to try - giving the students a safe space to learn and fail My strengths are patience and easy to understand when explaining something. Because I encourage them to also do it along with my explanation, such as learning by doing…

A good tutor not only helps the student understand the content but also encourages critical thinking and a genuine interest in learning. Importantly,…

A tutor can be a role model for the student. Generally students observe character and skills of a tutor and in most cases they try to imitate them. As a tutor we have to be a responsible individual gradually transferring our personality to aspiring students. After all today's students are tommorrow's mentors. I think my determination and my…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space where students feel confident to ask, share, and explore. Once that trust is there, it becomes much easier to guide them, inspire curiosity, and help them believe in themselves. I want the students to be confident and build their self-esteem. My strengths as a tutor…

The most important thing a tutor - or any teacher - can do is spark a genuine desire to learn, rather than making learning feel like a requirement. When students are encouraged to personally connect with a subject, its quirks and intricacies, they stop seeing learning as a chore and start seeing it as something they truly enjoy. I'm really good at…

I am adaptive and energetic. I listen to a child's need and work according to his/her learning behaviour. I am very patient while teaching and try…

A tutor should be able to help a student where ever they struggle. A tutor needs to have full knowledge of what the student requires, what they already know, and the best approach in guiding them. If there is no progress in their performance, then clearly the tutor might not be teaching or guiding them in the right way, in which case they should…

Flexibility in teaching style is one of the key aspects of effective learning of student. Depending on the student performance, a tutor changes his techniques and approaches to enhance learning of student. A tutor must be a good listener, which can help to understand student's doubts. Being patient while teaching is also important. A tutor must…

In my opinion that would be helping a student discover their own motivation and confidence. By showing them what they’re truly capable of and helping them build on that, we can foster a sense of ownership over their learning and long-term growth. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable about admitting the lessons that the student really doesn't understand, and eventually make that student feel confident by equipping her/him with methods to break down and analyse the problem in digestible steps. I firmly believe a tutor should not spoon feed a student; instead, let him/her attempt…

The most important thing a tutor can do is never give up on a student. A tutor needs to be patient with his pupils since every student cannot grasp a particular concept at the same rate , therefore patience and understanding the student is more important. A tutor should also give time for students to practice as math is all about logic and…

Inside CollingwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 James explored addition and subtraction strategies before using visual models to deepen understanding of multiplication.

In Year 9, Maryam practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination methods, then applied these skills to real-world worded problems.

For Year 11, Sarah focused on graphing sine, cosine, and tangent functions, learning how to use the unit circle and exact value triangles for trigonometric calculations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for VCE exams struggled to select the right formula without relying on notes—"she needed help deciding which method fit each scenario."

In Year 9, a student's algebra working was hard to follow; lines were crowded and steps not set out, leading to confusion when checking answers.

A Year 7 learner avoided writing working for fraction problems, hesitating to attempt questions unless sure of the process.

Meanwhile, in upper primary, incomplete homework left gaps in measurement skills and worded questions went unanswered. The result: confidence dipped after setbacks and valuable revision time was spent relearning missed basics.

Recent Achievements

One Collingwood tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student, Celeste, who now tackles trigonometric problems independently after previously needing lots of prompting—she worked through all the [0, 2π] domain questions with barely any hints.

Another high school student, Maryam, who used to get stuck on simultaneous equations, managed to solve them using both methods without waiting for step-by-step guidance.

In primary sessions, James (Year 3) started speaking up when unsure about new times tables instead of guessing quietly; last lesson he tried the three times table aloud and checked his answers himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Collingwood College-Collingwood Alternative School.
