The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clear, tailored explanations, foster a positive and supportive learning environment, and build the student's confidence in their abilities. A tutor should also encourage critical thinking, promote independent learning, and adapt their approach to meet the student's unique needs,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are increasing their confidence, encouraging them to take initiative in their study, and enjoy the process of learning. In my experience as a receiver of tutoring (for maths) and a teacher, I found that while explaining concepts well is extremely important, the most effective way to…

I think that structure and predictability is the most important thing a tutor can do, as it is easier for students to know what to expect in class, and future lessons. Having organised lesson plans not only ensures that all key topics are covered, but also allows students to focus more on the material itself rather than wondering what will come…

The most important things one can do for a student is to encourage, to have empathy and to believe. To encourage is essential as one must never give up, no matter how hard the task at hand seems to be. To be empathetic is also key in this situation as the student needs to understand you understand what he is going through. Not everybody is good at…

A tutor's role gets more prominent when s/he tries to enable the learner to understand the language and use the language in the real world. Put it simply, the learner should be enabled to understand English, analyse it, speak it and more importantly use the English functions in the right place. For instance, in sessions with learners, I will…

The foremost thing a student asks is the necessity and further use of the topics which they are being taught This is where the tutor steps in. A practical approach always helps in the long run. Once the students are aware about the usage of the concepts, they are able to grasp them much faster. Subjects like Mathematics tend to bore the…

I think the most important thing as a tutor is encouraging the student to want to learn, and to actively seek out explanations and ask questions. Even if a tutor can explain something very clearly, a student who does not want to learn will probaly not pay much attention, and the explanations will go over their head. By building a rapport with them…

Inside CoolarooTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Emily worked on calculating the **perimeter and area of various shapes**, including squares, rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms, as well as finding the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms.

In Year 8, Sam tackled **composite shape problems** by breaking down complex figures to find their perimeter and area using addition and subtraction of sections.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Zoe focused on algebraic skills—defining coefficients, terms, expressions, equations—and practiced **rewriting algebraic expressions without multiplication signs** while determining rules from x and y value tables.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often omitted steps when solving algebraic equations, making it difficult to spot errors; as one tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

In Year 11, a student's solutions for probability questions were hard to follow due to messy formatting and inconsistent use of terminology—this led to confusion during revision.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner frequently left homework incomplete and struggled with dividing two-digit numbers independently, sometimes losing focus partway through tasks. The missed practice meant skills weren't consolidating between lessons.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Coolaroo noticed Oscar's shift to independence from relying on reassurance to independently checking his own maths solutions—by the end of one session, he was confidently using the backchecking method and asked for help far less often than before.

In Year 11, Sedra started choosing formulas unaided; she now automatically writes out her working when stuck and explains her thought process after prompting.

Meanwhile, Zoyi in Year 4 managed to complete two major activities within 30 minutes each—a first for her—and scored 12 out of 15 on an addition topic test.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hume Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's Coptic Orthodox College.
