To be able to identify the students strengths and weaknesses before coming up with a teaching method that is suitable to their most preferred way of learning and the way of learning that they would be able to benefit most from. Additionally, making sure the student is comfortable enough to share what they do not understand or to feedback on what…

A tutor should know the student's learning style well and be able to cater to their needs. A tutor should also provide a strong foundation to the subjects so that students can build upon this foundation and practice and get better in the future. A tutor should also build good, consistent study habits in the student, and build up the student's…

Confidence. A great tutor doesn't just teach the subject, they help the student believe they can master it. That shift in mindset is what drives real progress. One of my biggest strengths as a tutor is my ability to explain complex ideas in a simple, clear way. Because I'm studying mechanical engineering, I had to learn how to break down difficult…

I think the most important thing is patience as not all students are fast learner. Sometimes repetition is needed in tutoring and we need to stay calm and cool while explaining it repeatedly. Also, communication skills are essential. A good tutor knows how to deliver the subject so that it is easy to be understood by the student. 1. Patience 2.…

According to me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be a good listener. It is very important to know and understand why a student is facing a problem in a particular situation so that it can be tackled. The tutor should also be compassionate and patient toward the student and should be able to adapt themselves as per the…

I think my opinion about teaching is for different kids should have different method. For example, when you teach an introverted but smart kid you can’t just tell him what to do, you have to give him more courage and gain his trust, because the kid is wise enough and you just need to lead the right not to tell him how to do. Second. It is being…

I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut approach. A…

As a tutor , I have opportunity 1 to 1 (or 1 to a small group ) to have two way communication with the student so that i can try to understand their own need and adjust my tutoring to fit their need I think years of study in math and engineering and year 1 level physics and chemistry would be a strength. While back to high school i had studied…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is understand their student’s weakness and strengths and work on them and use them respectively. The major role is guidance. Showing them that it is just not about passing exams and good grades but the knowledge and values remain with you until lifetime. Hence a tutor can be the one that guides a…

In addition to inculcating academic knowledge in students, a tutor can help students become more passionate towards a subject and can enable the student to grow as a holistic individual by providing moral support and mentorship for the student and helping the student grow in his/her values. A tutor can build a child's confidence, boost them to achieve higher. Help them to ask questions because they will learn from that. Furthermore if it is hard for a student to understand something, a tutor should try a different approach so that the student understands better. The tutor should come up with new learning strategies. As a tutor the…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

Support my students and give them the skills to excel in their education while also fulfilling their goals. active communication will enable the tutor to understand the student's issues, strengths, weaknesses, and effectively plan the lessons for student's need. In addition to that, a clear and simplified explanation of subjects will not only enable understanding of the topic, but also could develop an interest of the subject in the student. Once the…

I think patience is the biggest key factor as without that there can be no way a tutor could help a student. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make the student want to study the subject, instead of relying on others for help. It is important to build a relationship with the student and to always guide them but not push them to their limits. It is also important that the student understands how its done, while having them memorise a pattern is easy, allowing them to understand how to solve these types of questions will allow them to apply their solution to more things.…

Inside CottesloeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Chloe practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages, and tackled worded percentage problems using real-life discount scenarios.

Year 9 student Lachlan worked on sketching linear equations by creating tables of values and identifying gradients and intercepts, then moved to distinguishing between parallel and perpendicular lines on graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia explored solving quadratic equations using factorisation and the quadratic formula, with extra focus on recognising turning points and sketching parabolas accurately from given equations.

Recent Challenges

Several high school students repeatedly did not complete homework, as seen in Years 9 and 11 ("Did not complete homework, needs to complete at least the minimum amount"), which limited class time for deeper practice.

In Year 10 algebra, working out was often messy or skipped entirely—"notation and setting out needs significant improvement"—making it difficult to spot errors or understand steps.

One Year 8 student consistently tried to solve problems in her head rather than writing out calculations, leading to confusion when tackling multi-step word problems.

During a Year 12 lesson, "sketching was rough…needs to work on doing her sketching as neat and accurate as possible," so graph interpretation suffered under test conditions.

Recent Achievements

One Cottesloe tutoring session saw a Year 11 student who previously rushed through problems begin to slow down and check her answers for sense, catching errors before they became habits.

A Year 8 student who used to hesitate when faced with worded percentage problems is now breaking them into key steps independently and showing her working clearly without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 has started attempting every maths question on her own first—something she avoided last term—and only asks the tutor for help after giving it a real try herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Claremont Community Hub & Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like North Cottesloe Primary School.
