A teacher must be able to impart knowledge to his/her students. Its not only good that a physics tutor should have a good command of his core area of specialty, he/she must also be able to pass the knowledge across in a way the students will comprehend. Ability to come down to the level of my student and create an enabling environment for them to …

Be able to answer questions, both about the content and work as well as study habits and tips to do well on tests and exams. A tutor must also be able to teach in various ways to suit the students learning methods. Recently completing year 12 I have good study tips and I am determined to help the student and will aim to teach in which ever way…

Questioning is a key skill for both teacher and student as well. It helps to understand the contents better and engage in higher-order thinking. Tutors' knowledge and moral support are the most important things for students I'm adaptable to the classroom environment I'm a self-motivated, energetic person and possess good interpersonal…

the most important thing is for the tutor to teach how the student best learns. We are not in large class rooms, so we have the luxury, to teach in specific ways, that might only be good for that one student. I'm patient and can therefore spend as much time as the student needs on any given topic. I'm thorough, so I make sure there are no…

I think the most important thing is to instil them with confidence, as I have found that this is one of the biggest problems that slow down the understanding of something. Something new can look very daunting, especially when it comes to maths. Because of my experience a a recent student, I can more easily understand the road blocks that cause…

Tutors must be both patient and very understanding of the student's learning. This requires the ability to set the pace and change the style of communication in a way that the student will best work with. I am a very patient, polite and adaptable person. I feel that I can effectively communicate and work with my student to tackle problems in the…

The most important thing that any teacher or tutor can do for a student is to inspire them. whether it is to inspire them not to give up, or inspire them to want to pursue knowledge even after they have left the confines of the learning space. My ability to communicate complex ideas through simpler more understandable concepts. My knowledge in…

I believe a physics tutor/teacher should always strive to develop an interest about subject matter in the student. Once the student does not think of the subject as burden, he will be able to learn very efficiently. Teaching at various levels has taught me to understand students from different academic backgrounds better. Every student has a…

Inside Cottles BridgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sam worked on integration and its applications, including solving simultaneous equations using algebraic methods.

A Year 11 student, Lily, focused on conditional probability, discrete random variables, and interpreting binomial distributions through practice questions.

For Year 8, Josh reviewed linear functions by plotting points on the number plane and finding the rule for straight-line graphs, as well as practising probability with Venn diagrams and practical exercises.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student tackling probability and integration was noted to rely heavily on the CAS calculator, especially when inputting equations—"separating characters on the CAS caused incorrect answers," according to one tutor.

In Year 7, a student's written maths work showed inconsistent layout for linear equations, making it harder to track errors or review steps later.

Meanwhile, a primary student preparing creative writing pieces struggled with organizing ideas and often jumped from topic to topic without linking details.

When homework was left incomplete in Year 8 science revision, class time had to be spent catching up rather than deepening understanding.

Recent Achievements

One Cottles Bridge tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate when tackling worded probability questions now confidently breaks down each part and checks which formula fits, instead of freezing up.

In a recent session with a Year 9 student, she took the lead in identifying when to use sine or cosine for triangle problems—last term she'd wait for hints, but this time she explained her reasoning out loud before solving.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often rushed through decimals has started pausing to double-check her steps and even corrected her own mistake without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Matt was excellent, he helped Josh immensely. I only wish we had started earlier. I now know who to come to for my other two children. Thank you.

Paul is very pleased with Peter's tutoring style and he feels he is making progress as he recently sat a math test and did better than previously. Paul is being better motivated by Peter and as Peter explains it , Paul feels he understands concepts better. Thank you.

Thank you for following up on the tutoring.  Kishan is proving to be very suitable. He and Chris relate very well.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mernda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Learning Co-Operative School.
