I believe that a safe and welcoming learning environment is more important as it ensures a student will get the most out of their learning experience. If there is an environment which welcomes questions and challenging areas which an individual may be less comfortable with, it can assist one with reaching their full potential and making learning…

The things i consider important between a chemistry tutor and a student are understanding, listening to each other and finding ways around to help the student understand concepts better, working with different techniques with different students and most importantly, fostering independance. Foster independance is really important because it allows…

I believe the most important things a chemistry tutor can do are to create a comfortable, non-judgmental environment where students feel safe to ask questions without fear of feeling “stupid†and to support them at their individual level. By meeting students where they are and encouraging progress at their own pace, tutors can build…

A tutor’s main role is to help a student understand and build confidence in what they’re learning. This means being patient, providing clear explanations, and offering encouragement when things get tough. It’s also important to identify the student’s or learners strengths and weaknesses so we can focus on what really matters for their…

I think the most important things a chemistry tutor can do for the student is guide them and encourage them. I think my strengths as a tutor is my patience and communication. I like leading students to an answer rather than outright just giving it to them. I think with patience and communication, I can help students independently learn and solve…

Being supportive and understanding towards their abilities and needs as a student. I think acknowledging that everybody learns differently and being able to adapt your teaching style to cater towards the learning requirements of individual students is a key essential for all tutors. Since this is a 1-on-1 tutorial, the tutor must give full attention to the student. Also to find ways to make sessions enjoyable but not to the point of sacrificing the time for teaching. And again to be patient so that the student can fully understand the topics being discussed. My best quality as a tutor would be my patience. I know a lot of…

Being a student myself, I know how students are curious about multiple aspects but don't ever question them because they think the question is stupid. However, as a chemistry tutor I can provide them the support they need outside of their school to ensure they properly understand every topic. I haven't really tutored anyone before, but from…

Give encouragement for their studies, give them confidence to write their exams well, help them with their inabilities. I am also capable of analysing the students'…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is adjust their teaching methods and style based on each student. Teaching with only one style and using the same methods for everyone won't work, and if you can't adjust, your sessions becomes very robotic and boring. I like to make sure I'm personalising my lessons for each individual student and…

A tutor typically works 1-on-1, therefor it's important to treat each student as an individual and figure out what style of learning works best for them. A tutor should collaborate with the student to help them reach academic heights that they would not be able to with regular schooling alone. I am positive, encouraging, but also thorough. I am…

I personally consider the interactive and "adaptive" aspects of being a chemistry tutor to be the most important things a tutor can do for their student. In my opinion, keeping the student engaged, such as through mini breaks or games between long sessions of work, is the most effective way of teaching them in a fun, yet informative manner.…

To be able to truly listen to a student about what exactly they are struggling/worried about, and help them gain confidence in their own abilities. For students that are already doing quite well academically, the best thing a tutor could do is enhance their curiosity for knowledge and help them extend their knowledge. Most of all, making learning…

Inside Cranbourne EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Arman focused on improving multiplication using box and lattice methods, then revisited addition and subtraction skills through targeted worksheets.

In Year 8, Mahima tackled simultaneous equations by learning both the substitution and elimination methods, alongside expanding and factorising algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Jessica concentrated on drawing linear graphs by calculating gradients and intercepts, as well as applying index laws for multiplying and dividing indices with like bases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, messy or unclear written calculations led to confusion, especially when simplifying algebraic expressions—one tutor observed, "She needs to fix some of her maths layout, primarily on how she sets out her calculations."

A Year 10 student hesitated to ask for help with difficult worded problems and spent too long worrying about unfamiliar concepts, which slowed progress.

In senior years, a lack of double-checking persisted in probability and indices work; mistakes often went unnoticed because answers weren't reviewed.

When homework was incomplete in Year 7 algebra tasks, earlier gaps in times tables knowledge remained unaddressed.

Recent Achievements

One Cranbourne East tutoring session saw a Year 10 student finally stop needing the tutor's approval after every algebra step; she now checks her own work and only asks for feedback at the end, a big change from before when she needed reassurance throughout.

A high schooler who used to get stuck on index laws now completes homework independently and has improved her maths layout significantly.

In Year 5, one student who was hesitant about long division is starting to write out each step methodically, even converting remainders into fractions—a habit he hadn't tried before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Cranbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cranbourne East Primary School.
