Not every student learns in the same way despite the fact that every student is expected to learn the same way. Some students require additional support or alternative explanations for difficult concepts - which is where a tutor is required. The most important thing that a tutor can do is to unlock a student's full potential so they perform to the…

First and foremost, I believe a tutor should inspire genuine passion and interest from a student with regards to the subject at hand- I strongly feel that students perform their best when they take interest and see the value in the concepts being taught. Furthermore, it's important that a tutor is able to adapt to the learning and working style of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen to them - tutoring is never one size fits all. Each approach should be more individual, so that students can not only learn, but build confidence in their abilities. My strengths as a tutor are my ability to create personal relationships with students, in order to understand them and…

Give them the confidence they need to stay motivated to acheive their Goals. Whether it be merely passing a class or excelling wih 99%, any improvement needs to be congratulated. Be patient, if the student is not understanding your explanation, obviously a different approach is needed. Do not lecture. This the students are already receiving in…

The most important things a tutor can do are to build a student’s confidence, provide personalized guidance, and create a safe space for learning. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is help a student build confidence. When students start to believe they’re capable, they approach challenges with a more positive mindset and make much faster progress. One of my strengths is patience. I don’t mind going over something multiple times in different ways until it makes sense…

Help the student to understand concepts and how to think about solutions to problems and to think about how they apply concepts they learn, so that when they're alone they can think clearly and accurately for themselves. A tutor can also strive to make a subject more interesting for a student by finding a way to explain things which works for the…

from my own experience, the best tutors were not necessarily the best academic performers, rather they had the ability to understand me and my needs and then cater towards them in the most effective way. For instance, some students learn faster than others, so it is the job of the tutor to recognise this and adopt it to their teaching style. I…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build a connection with the student. By building a connection, it means that the tutor is able to think from the shoes of the student. When a tutor knows the thoughts of student, the tutor is then able to use suitable methods to help the students. By building a relationship with…

I think that the best thing to do when tutoring is allow the students free rein when answering questions, as I have often found that almost all of their learning comes from when they make mistakes. I tend to try to give them only small nudges when getting them to complete a question, and reduce the amount of my interference over preceding…

Listening to the student is very important. You need to know when they are getting frustrated and exactly what is confusing them. Sometimes they figure out a different method for solving a problem and if you don't fully understand what they are saying you may not realise they are on the correct track. Inside CrawleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Tanisha focused on trigonometric functions, specifically working through where and why she finds these challenging.

In Year 10, Chloe prepared for an upcoming Matrices test by tackling matrix operations and understanding adjacency matrices as used in different graph types.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Sofia practised addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers along with revision of multiplication tables for improved number fluency.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student often avoided writing out steps when tackling equations, preferring to "solve in his mind"—this led to confusion and errors, especially as problems became more complex.

In Year 11 English, another student struggled with essay planning and left arguments underdeveloped; a tutor noted, "he needs more practice in forming concise points which support his argument."

Meanwhile, in Year 6 Maths, a student was quick to use the calculator before attempting questions independently. These habits resulted in lost marks or incomplete understanding during assessments, causing visible frustration and dented confidence mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Crawley tutor recently saw Chloe, a high school student, start making her own summary notes during lessons—she'd previously relied only on verbal explanations, but now refers back to her written notes when tackling practice problems in Matrices.

In another session, Gabriel, also in high school, showed a shift by recalling formulas for area and volume from memory without prompts; earlier sessions had him frequently pausing to check or ask for reminders.

Meanwhile, Flynn (Year 6) moved from needing step-by-step help with rearranging equations to working through hypotenuse problems independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Nedlands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Nedlands Primary School.
