The best thing a tutor can do isn’t just teaching - it’s changing how students approach learning. A good tutor encourages students to rely on their own judgment rather than memorizing answers. This means breaking down complex ideas and encouraging critical thinking. But a lot of tutors get this wrong. Instead of helping students grasp the…

I believe the most significant aspect of a tutor is integrity and maintaining a level of respect to my students. In supporting my students, besides academic help, mental supports are also critically vital, hence it is crucial for me to ensure my students are well-balanced of both academic and social aspects. Regarding teaching, I believe I can…

Adapt to their way of learning. Whether this is more theory focus, or if it’s putting it into real life ways so they can physically grasp the context. I can explain a topic in multiple ways until the student finds one that resonates with…

I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is help them work towards their goals. I like to build up their confidence towards their weakness and most importantly educate them on their learning style which is so important long term. Not only can they identify their learning style but they will adapt to a new revision method that’s most…

Explaining in the simplistic way that a student can understand. If you can not explain it in simple terms it means you do not understand it. The tutor should be patient and help the student understand. I am patient, easy going and quickly understand the problems that students face during their studies. I love Mathematics and Physics so much that I…

Firstly, as a former student I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is inspire and guide a student to learn on their own - as easy as it is to simply give away answers, actually getting someone to really put in a bit more effort is the challenging (and more rewarding) part. After that it just comes down to being able to connect with a…

To get them engaged and interested in a subject or topic. Although it is good to just teach the student how to pass the exam, I believe that by truly engaging and motivating a student they will get the most reward and the best results from their work. A good tutor can analyse the strengths and weaknesses of students, and guide them accordingly. Mathematics is all about practice and being exposed to different variations of questions, and a tutor should be able to acknowledge the students' situation and prepare the most suitable practice exercises for them. Allow the student to discover rather than memorise - I understand that subjects such as Maths can feel overwhelming if given as rote learning. Instead, allowing the students to discover the content for themselves not only helps with retaining information, but can make learning fun! The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to empower them to become independent learners. This involves building confidence by providing encouragement and celebrating successes, fostering a belief in the student's potential. The most crucial factors, in my opinion, are boosting the student's self-esteem, ensuring that they comprehend the material rather than merely memorizing it, and fostering an environment where they feel free to make mistakes. A good tutor not only helps with grades but also helps students develop problem-solving skills they can carry forward.…

A tutor should be able to identify and convey concepts that may be considered as challenging or difficult for the student in a simple and clear manner. I think I'm rather empathetic and can connect with younger people, especially given my young age, this is important in building rapport which I believe is essential for establishing a good work…

I think a tutor needs to be encouraging so that students can develop positive attitudes towards their studies, as that will help them succeed on their own. Inside Cremorne PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Xander focused on trigonometric ratios and reviewing concepts from his recent maths exam to reinforce understanding of key topics.

In Year 7, Soraya worked through past paper questions covering algebraic factorisation and quadratic equations, with an emphasis on both the quadratic formula and completing the square.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student practiced rounding numbers as well as using visual aids to understand fractions, building confidence in core numeracy skills.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, Charlie needed to look back at notes often for trigonometric ratios and equations not provided in exams—this slowed her down during problem-solving and risked gaps if resources weren't available.

In a Year 10 session, one student hesitated with algebraic problem solving, "deferring instead to decimals" when unsure, which meant missed opportunities to build confidence with unfamiliar techniques.

A Year 7 student sometimes left homework incomplete or prioritized easier addition problems over those involving carrying; as noted, "she completed long addition questions that did not need carrying." This led to less practice with the challenging skills required for tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Cremorne Point noticed Charlie, a high school student, now tackles past exam papers almost entirely on his own—he used to rely on his notes but recently completed a whole paper independently and highlighted key points for revision.

Soraya, also in high school, demonstrated a big shift by not just solving area questions quickly but explaining her reasoning aloud without prompting; previously she hesitated to share her thought process.

In primary, Xander struggled with number sentences last week but this time answered every one correctly after extra practice, showing real improvement in accuracy and self-correction.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stanton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Loreto Kirribilli.
