I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

Their dreams become my dreams for them, so I will never let my students give up on reaching their goals. Improvements do not happen overnight, but whenever they do happen, no matter how small, I…

A tutor helps students to improve their learning by contextualizing their learning based on their learning needs, aligning with learning difficulties, and provide constant help and boosting up their confidence in…

I think a tutor can teach a student how to learn a topic after it is explained by the tutor. Because at the end, it is the student who needs to learn by themselves after something is being taught to them. A tutor should make sure that anyone can learn those topics on their own if they are introduced by the tutor. My first strength as a tutor is my…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

Encouraging and patient when explaining concepts to students. Tutors need to provide encouragement as this will build both motivation within the student to do well in a subject, and increase their overall confidence in a difficult topic. I believe setting achievable goals is also an important thing a tutor can do. Patience is also critical, as…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is pose as their mentor than just a teacher. By doing this, a student will feel safe, and empowered; this in turn will make them learn better. Moreover, it is important for a tutor to build their confidence. It is essential to build on the weak areas of a student. Additionally, a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond simply reviewing homework. A tutor must make sure the student truly understands the 'why' behind the concepts, especially in subjects like Math, Chemistry, and Biology. Rote memorization is temporary; genuine understanding, which comes from breaking down complex ideas, is permanent.…

Inside CroydonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Aryan worked through rearranging linear equations and inequalities, then began graphing straight-line equations.

Another Year 8, Manav, focused on factorising and expanding algebraic expressions with variables and revised dividing fractions and square roots.

For Year 7, Anna tackled area and circumference of circles before moving onto volume calculations for cylinders and other prisms, using diagrams to support her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student's exercise book was described as "could be a bit more neat with the writing and presenting," making it hard to check working, especially during decimal or algebra questions.

In Year 11, after not long on an assignment, one student gave up—confidence dropped quickly when answers didn't come easily, so revision time was spent worrying rather than reviewing feedback.

For a Year 6 learner, forgetting set homework ("needs more initiative doing set homework") meant missing out on key practice before tests.

A Year 9 student relied on guessing in basic maths rather than careful checking; this led to repeated errors and lost focus mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Croydon noticed one Year 10 student who used to guess answers now takes the time to write out her thinking and talk through stuck points, which has helped her solve worded questions more independently.

Another high school student recently completed all assigned homework ahead of schedule for the first time, showing new initiative compared to earlier weeks when tasks were left unfinished.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled with multi-step problems can now break down multiplication word questions into manageable parts and work them out without prompting—she finished her last set solo for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hindmarsh Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
