Optimism. Students need positivity and confidence above all else. As a tutor we need to make sure that we show them that every cloud has a silver lining and every problem they face they will only get stronger from those mistakes they make. Students get demotivated very quickly and it hits their ego when they can't seem to tackle a problem and this…

Over the years, I have developed the opinion that the teaching of transferable skills - contrary to only what is needed at the moment - is most valuable for the student’s future development. It is important to see that just completing the mandatory homework will not suffice, the real challenge is to change the mindset. As a good tutor, one has…

I'd say it's most important to understand how each student studies best and how to provide and fill in the gaps in one's understanding of the subject material in a concise fashion. Tutors should help and encourage students to set straightforward goals and basically keep the ball rolling to the point that they actively seek to complete their…

A tutor can change the perspective of a student towards the subject he/she is teaching. A tutor can build the concepts for basic learning in an effective way so that a student never faces a problem in those concepts. As a tutor. I am very patient. I can solve a single problem for a student as many times as he/she wants. I believe in a practical…

To be more open to any subject-related questions so students could as as many questions without any hesitation of being judge whether or not the question is senseless. Hence, they could understand the topic much faster. Great tutors could make the Session fun yet still serious, especially for high school students. I can spot how much students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop independent learning skills that they can use for the rest of their life. By teaching a student how to solve problems and learn concepts instead of feeding them answers they will become far more successful in all aspects of school. As a postgraduate student studying…

Being a supportive friend. Whether it's assignment or exam season, or even their personal struggles, tutor should extend help and not afraid to see the student get better. Also, by being available to help outside the class such as email if the student has additional question or more homework. I believe that studying alone can be quite isolating…

Improving a student's perception of the subject, from a hated monster, to an enjoyable and curious endeavour, is a critical and often undervalued element of tutoring. It is crucial that the student walks away from the lesson with a real-world understanding of how what is taught is important to society and our understanding of the universe. Lastly,…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to follow up with students regularly and create a friendly, supportive environment. When students feel comfortable, they’re less likely to get overwhelmed and more open to asking questions and learning from their mistakes. I’m confident in my understanding of the subjects I teach, and I can…

Being emphatic. I might be biased here, but it's only through empathy that you can help someone understand what you do understand. I believe I am really emphatic, so I almost always manage to understand at what point, in the logical pipeline of understanding a concept, a certain student has difficulty. I am patient and calm, there is no reason to…

I think the most important stuff a tutor can do is boost confidence to students. You have to make students believe they can tackle anything. It's also about giving tips on studying and problem-solving that fit them perfectly. Making learning fun and showing why it matters in real life—gets them to learn more. I think my strengths as a tutor are…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student from my experience is to have an emotional connection. I feel it is not just about delivering a lecture. A tutor must understand and respect a student’s thought process. For instance, during my second year of tutoring, I had this exceptionally smart student. But his grades rarely…

For me, the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is working out the best strategy that suits the student. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to foster understanding, inspire confidence, and cultivate a love for learning. By creating a supportive environment, a tutor can encourage students to explore and question, which is crucial for deep learning. Tailoring methods to individual needs and reinforcing concepts through practice…

Inside DaceyvilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Despina worked on understanding the area and volume of 2D and 3D shapes, along with practicing perimeter calculations.

Year 8 student Michael focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and applying the Pythagoras theorem to geometry problems, using visual examples for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sophia tackled chemistry syllabus content by reviewing electron configurations (spdf notation) and exploring trends in periodicity, including atomic radius and first ionisation energy.

Recent Challenges

Frequent reliance on calculators for basic operations, such as times tables and simple addition, made it harder for the Year 9 student to build fluency in index laws ("less use of calculator and a more thorough understanding and memorisation of times tables…").

In Year 11 Chemistry, incomplete memorization of polyatomic ions led to slower progress during ionic equation tasks.

For a Year 5 lesson, one student jumped quickly to answers without fully writing out working or reflecting on key phrases from questions, which meant missed details when reading texts.

During a senior selective-style test, another student struggled with time management and needed extra practice under timed conditions—she finished late and felt frustrated.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Daceyville recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after struggling with algebra, began working through examples independently and now occasionally solves problems without prompting.

In another session, a Year 9 student showed new initiative by finishing a research task on her own, whereas before she needed frequent reminders to stay on track.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has started reading out loud more confidently during comprehension activities and now actively eliminates incorrect answers instead of guessing.

Last week, a high schooler completed her science report on time for the first time this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Michael's Catholic Primary School.
