I think the most crucial role of a private tutor is to provide an experience and level of intimacy and personal service that cannot be found in the classroom. This is why I like to truly understand each of my students and tailor my approach to best suit their personal goals. I have been schooled across 3 different continents and curricula,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is analyzing them and figuring out their strengths and aspects where they need support the most. By doing so, the tutor can help the student find their potential and reach great heights - both academically and otherwise.. I have always been told that I am good at explaining things,…

I think the most important thing to understand as a tutor is that different students think differently. Certain students will naturally have more or less affinity to different subjects, but also different ways of learning. Trying to figure out which way to best teach requires understanding which way students are best able to learn. For instance,…

As a tutor the best thing to do for the student is to be patient, resilient and adaptable. As each student has different learning styles you need to be observant and communicate with them as much as possible to ensure that they are optimising their learning. Furthermore, the tutor must be enthusiastic about the subject, if the student sees that…

the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding. People learn at different paces and ways, you have to understand and connect with your student. Do not berate them and always encourage them. While I don't have any experience as a formal tutor, I believe you should be understanding and welcoming. By this I mean, that you should…

Creating a supportive and comfortable environment is perhaps the most crucial thing a tutor can do for a student. When students feel safe and at ease, they are more likely to open up about their difficulties and ask questions without fear of judgment. This openness allows the tutor to better understand where the student is struggling and tailor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt to suit their needs. Whilst many tutors can simply pass on content, a strong tutor is capable of teaching content in a way that suits the learning needs of a student. This may include using different communication methods, teaching at different paces and understanding the students…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is none other than making the student truly understand the solution to a problem, and the understanding of how the solution is built up, instead of forcing the student to memorize a certain formula to solve a problem, teaching them to recognize patterns as well as using simple…

First of all to establish good communication, so they feel comfortable and suit you. Next, is to understand the strength and the weakness of the student so you can know which thing to focus one. Help them to understand that they can learn. That they understand that teaching is one aspect of the education process and the other is learning. That all students have the capacity to learn especially if the teacher is prepared to apply their best effort to offering those students a way to understand the information. This can be assisted if both…

As a tutor, I believe it to be of utmost importance that the student does not feel helpless or lost in a certain school subject, as it is our duty to aid them as much as we can. By teaching and explaining ideas to our students with patience, it is with no doubt that our students will be able to grasp and fathom said ideas in no time. Most…

Inside DarlinghurstTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 Maddison worked on trigonometry, focusing on finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles and solving problems involving elevation, depression, and bearings using diagrams.

For Year 10, revision included bearings and angle of depression before moving into probability concepts—correcting worksheet errors and previewing relative frequency and non-linear relationships.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student prepared for exams by discussing theoretical versus experimental probability with examples on relative frequency, followed by a review of non-linear relationships including parabolas, exponentials, and circles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided asking questions in class when confused, especially during algebra and probability lessons; as one tutor noted, "she needed extra explanation, but didn't seek it out." This meant confusion built up until revisited later.

In Year 10 mathematics, another student struggled with exam preparation because revision focused only on familiar problems—when new question types appeared, confidence dropped sharply.

A senior student's messy working in geometry made errors hard to trace: "Working was so disorganised that small sign errors went unnoticed," a tutor observed. After the test, time was lost hunting for simple mistakes instead of reviewing concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Darlinghurst tutor noticed Maddison, a Year 9 student, now actively asks for help when stuck instead of guessing—something she avoided in earlier sessions.

In Year 11 maths, William took the initiative to list specific assignment areas he wanted to revisit and worked through complex probability questions with less guidance than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student recently completed 25 multiplication questions in under three minutes—a big jump from her slower attempts last term. Last week's session ended with her finishing all problems independently and double-checking her answers without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Darlinghurst Public School.
