The best thing which a maths tutor can do is to help students solve the difficulties which they are facing in their studies in such a way that rather than directly giving solutions to them, tutor can help in understanding the problem and concepts behind it. I am very patient and I focus on core subjects so students can solve any kind of problem…

I believe giving the student confidence is so important as no matter how well you teach them if they believe they can't do it they won't succeed. I always try to start my students off with more basic questions to give them that bit of confidence before working with them to solve the more complex questions. I'm known for being a happy and…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is make sure the student clearly understands the theory and understands the applications. This is because, students will be tested on their knowledge with complex unfamiliar questions where a more nuanced approach would be required. My experience in the QCAA syllabus and helping my classmates learn the…

The best thing a maths tutor can do for a student is it reduce the fear of studying/learning a subject. Mathematics is a tough subject and it is important tutors take the right approach when they teach that subject. I am a huge believer in teachers being friends with their students. One of the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student would be helping the student gain confidence in the area in which they are struggling. A tutor can do this through adjusting teaching methods for the most benefit of the student, helping them but not doing it for them and also providing encouragement and support. I have a lot of…

A tutor or at least a teacher is someone who can give students a helping hand, perhaps a friend is too informal but someone they can relate to. I think being able to understand your student and what makes them improve or how they can improve is also essential as a maths tutor and a teacher. It is useless to spoon feed facts and knowledge to a…

Ideally, I want to instill the same sense of wonder and love that I have for mathematics in the students. This won't work for all students, of course, so failing that I think a maths tutor should be able to teach a student how to think for themselves - it's one thing to be shown how to get an answer, and it's another thing entirely to be taught…

I believe a maths tutor shouldn't just focus on helping out their students during sessions. I think the most important thing is to listen to the student and allow them to feel confident in asking for help. It's important to make sure that the student doesn't feel dumb or like they're being looked down upon when asking a question. It's also important to be honest, if you don't know the answer it's better to tell the student this and…

Helping them complete their work is part of the job. However, the most important thing is making sure students are relaxed. If they are getting overwhelmed they shouldn't be pushed because then it'll make them feel like they can't do it. So tackling their weaknesses at a realistic pace will help them not feel pressured to understand straight away.…

Inside DeagonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Ava worked through representing data using frequency tables and histograms, as well as reviewing how to compare sets of data visually.

Year 9 student Ethan focused on ratios, rates, and percentages by solving real-life problems involving proportional reasoning and calculating discounts.

For Year 10, Chloe practiced simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination methods, then tackled straight line algebra concepts including gradient and y-intercept identification from equations.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often needed reminders to recall basic factors when simplifying ratios, leading to extra time spent on multi-step division instead of practicing efficient methods. "She'd divide by 4, then by 2, missing the quicker path," noted one tutor during ratio work.

In Year 11, another student repeatedly delayed assignment drafts, which meant there was little chance to clarify difficult sections or seek feedback before deadlines.

Meanwhile, a senior physics student did not submit a full draft for assessment; as a result, key concepts and data analysis remained incomplete when support was most needed.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Deagon noticed one Year 10 student who used to rush through maths problems is now backchecking her answers aloud, catching errors and explaining her reasoning—something she rarely attempted before.

In a recent high school session, Oscar demonstrated real initiative by identifying his own weak spots in algebra and actively applying feedback between lessons, which has led to noticeably more accurate solutions on practice exams.

Meanwhile, a younger student working on a cowshed reconstruction project figured out unknown dimensions independently for the first time, then confidently converted not-to-scale drawings into real measurements without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sandgate Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sandgate District State High School.
