I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to get the student to understand a topic, not memorize a topic. For example, if I were to teach a student about the distance formula, I would explain how the formula was derived first. I believe showing a student a formula and not explaining how it was derived leaves a gap in…

I believe the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and foster a positive attitude towards learning. By creating a supportive and encouraging environment, tutors can help students overcome their fears and self-doubt, which is often the biggest barrier to their success. This involves not only teaching…

I believe that a maths tutor should understand that students have different ways of the studying that actually help them in their studies, and they should be able to adapt and prepare new ways of teaching that is most valuable to students. A tutor should be motivating but disciplinary to students, to ensure they maintain a good mindset towards…

I believe a student's emotional well-being, especially their feelings towards their studies is very important. By addressing what's causing them distress and overwhelming feelings a maths tutor can greatly improve a student's performance. This is because one's attitude can hugely impact not only the amount of effort one is willing to put in, but…

The best thing is to guide a student in a direction which is best according his or her capabilities. He/she should be motivated to follow the path in which he /she has upper hand or better grasping power. Tutoring is not just about teaching ......It decides the future of next generations. So a maths tutor acts as a blueprint for a student's…

The most important thing to me is that the student feels comfortable with my teaching style and that they are motivated to learn, not feeling that the subject is too hard or too dry, but instead I prioritise adding personal interest of the students and relate it to the topic which helps to grasp better understanding towards it. My strengths are…

To understand which areas they need most help with and then work closely with them to help them perform better. I believe it’s important to empathise with students rather then being sympathetic. Sympathy comes with one feeling a sense of emotion for sometime. Whereas, when in comes to tutoring, we need to empathise with students as it’ll allow us to position ourselves in their circumstances. Therefore, will give as a vision of a reality closer to what a…

By my little experience, i think that tutoring is not only directing the children to a specific point but opening their mind to a broader level by keeping into mind the child's interests. 1. Understand the strong areas a student is in, let's say it's hard to teach the student mathematics/science when his/her passion is towards art. Understanding the key competencies of a student makes a good tutor, who can then channel them in the right direction to progressive and efficient results. 2. Practical learning, it's easier to teach…

Tutor should be able to understand the students' mindset as well as the subject knowledge student has before starting the tutorial. Try to make things simple so that students can grasp easily. Tutor can guide the student effectively. Tutoring doesn’t mean delivering lecture and completing the curriculum. It is responsible for holistic development of the pupils. Inside DerrimutTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Emma revised quadratic equations and functions, focusing on graph interpretation and problem-solving; Year 10 student Lucas tackled trigonometry by graphing sine and cosine functions, along with a review of transformations to strengthen his foundation; meanwhile, Year 3 student Zoe practiced multiplication facts and solved word problems involving money using real-life scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Mathematics, one student was "a bit lax with her homework," leading to missed practice on application questions and slower progress in trigonometry graphing.

In a senior English session, skipping questions when unsure meant some tasks were left incomplete and unattempted until prompted.

A Year 5 learner's written work was described as "hard to follow," with untidy layout making it difficult to check for errors—especially in multi-step problems.

Meanwhile, a primary student repeatedly avoided challenging multiplication questions, returning only to familiar material and requiring frequent reminders to persist when tasks became unfamiliar or effortful.

Recent Achievements

One Derrimut tutor noted a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to quietly guess at problems but now regularly asks for help when stuck, especially during complex homework—she completed nearly all tasks this week and initiated questions on her own.

A high schooler in Year 9 has started challenging herself by choosing harder questions for practice, getting them right on recent assignments after previously sticking only to basics.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who struggled to recite times tables can now confidently recall them aloud without prompting and tackled double-digit multiplication with less support than before.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Gary is doing a great job and Emilee is really appreciative of their time together.

Carl has enjoyed working with both his tutors this year and is well prepared for his VCE math methods exams. Having a personal tutor, even for a student like Carl who is already achieving excellent academic results, has helped relieve some of the stress of VCE and enabled him to sort out areas he wanted to work on with more depth.

Bailey is really happy with Jackie, and so are we, he enjoys their sessions and I can see he is understanding much better.  Jackie is very courteous and punctual.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brimbank Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Derrimut Primary School.
