I believe the most important thing a tutor can and should do for a student is to be adaptable to their circumstances and learning style. Each student is different, and a tutor should be ready to change their teaching style to suit the students needs to facilitate the student's development. This gives the student the best chance to succeed. I…

Active listening. I believe this is the most important trait and thing a tutor can do for a student. This is because our role is to educate and a way of guiding students to take in information in the best or most efficient way, and part of that is listening actively to what the student wants out of tutoring sessions and adjusting however possible…

Be able to explain things clearly and in a way that the child will understand. Also, it is important to be open to, and encourage questions about any little detail they do not understand to ensure they gain the best understanding of the concepts. Being able to communicate and explain a concept in different ways to ensure the client understands.…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do is be patient, listen to students and teach them learning strategies that can used for the rest of their lives. By being patient, a tutor can help a student to learn concepts and instill self-confidence, enabling them to achieve their best. Furthermore, listening to students carefully allows…

To me, a great tutor stands for patience, responsibility and giving the students full support where they needed. I define a patient tutor as whom give students the time and courage to think about solving problems without pressure. I think so rather than just teaching them if a tutor can actually make hard concepts easier for other students by using their experience and actually make learning fun then it would be really helpful for a student. As I am a post grad student I have recently gone through my tutorials and I know as a post grad student where do students face…

Previous to having my own children, I loved the confidence building my tutoring has offered and I have had the experiences and joys of their success in their personal journeys from both the students, and their parents. Instilling confidence and therefore motivation for a student is what drives the outcome to their optimal personal success. I have…

I think that the tutor acts as a mentor for the student. In this role, the tutor should encourage the students to think critically in order to find answers to their questions. By providing the means to discover the answers for themselves, the tutor ensures that the student does not merely address the 'what' of the question but is also able to…

I feel understanding the student is the number one priority as every student cannot learn topics like trigonometry at once. Be patient. I believe undermining a students effort is the worst thing that could be done, not just from a tutor but from any significant figure in a students life. A tutor must be patient irregardless if a student isn't following the lesson plan how they would like, and the tutor should tailor it accordingly to their needs. I pay close attention…

I believe a tutor should not only be a teacher to a student but also a mentor. As a student myself I used to dread tutoring because of performance pressure…

Knowledgeable and supportive, patient and great communication skills
Khalida, Doncaster East

Inside Doncaster EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised long division with remainders and explored onomatopoeias to strengthen both numeracy and creative language skills.

For Year 8, Lily worked through textbook review questions in measurement, focusing on applying Pythagoras' theorem to find missing side lengths in right-angled triangles.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Daniel concentrated on trigonometry by identifying which trigonometric ratio (sine, cosine, or tangent) to use when solving for unknown angles or sides in various problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 Biology, a student avoided making her own notes on cellular respiration, which meant key details (like inputs/outputs) were not fully memorised; as one tutor noted, "she needs to create her own notes to help with memorisation."

Meanwhile, in Year 9 Maths, another student relied heavily on mental calculations for algebra and skipped writing out steps—when mistakes happened, it became difficult to spot where things went wrong.

A Year 7 student sometimes struggled to identify what the question was asking in worded problems and spent extra time working backwards rather than building a clear process first.

Recent Achievements

One Doncaster East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who had previously hesitated to attempt harder algebra questions now works through complex inequalities independently, giving every question a try and getting them right.

In VCE Biology, another high school student who used to rely heavily on hints now confidently explains each stage of photosynthesis without prompting and answers new cellular respiration questions accurately.

Meanwhile, in primary sessions, a younger learner who once mixed up coin values can now count $5 and $10 notes correctly while adding up change, finishing her money exercises with no help needed.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Pines Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Donburn Primary School.
