It is very important that a tutor understands the strengths and weakness of a student and approach them accordingly. A personalised approach would be the best method to adopt and it is important to help the students become independent learners. A tutor should prepare the students to be life long learns with a never ending thirst for acquiring…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is not pressure students and understand that everyone learns differently. Not all students will get something right away, and what matters is being patient and staying with them through the process until they understand. I believe it is about making them feel supported instead of rushed, so they can…

Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. The most important thing that a tutor can do for students is to listen, which helps us understand their needs and enables us to help them effectively. I also think preparation on a tutor's part is a very important part of the relationship with a student. I would consider myself to be a great listener, which comes in handy in tutoring and I my…

A tutor can make use of the two kinds of experience he/she has. Firstly as a current/former student himself, he can impart a deeper and thorough understanding of the subject keeping in mind the future academic curriculum and its practical applications. Secondly his experience as a tutor means a patient engagement with his student, where in the…

For the student to be able to see me as someone he/she can rely upon. I say this because I was not very good at mathematics but when I had a tutor at the start of year 8, she was always friendly and made it very easy to talk to her. I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

Support. Providing a great amount of support and motivation is crucial for a student’s education path. The most important thing a tutor can do is to be open and offer an open exchange of exchange of information that allows a student to freely delve into a subject. I feel tutors better excel at this compared to teachers who's depth and exploration of a topic can be shallow due to the rigorous nature of the syllabus. My strengths would be gentle…

Inside DoonsideTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Mia practised solving one-step algebraic equations and explored angles through targeted problem sets.

For Year 10, Daniel worked on trigonometry, including applications of the cosine rule, as well as financial mathematics involving interest calculations.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Priya focused on HSC revision using past papers, tackling advanced algebra, geometry problems, and consolidating her understanding of measurement concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often checked answers only after finishing all questions, rather than step-by-step—mistakes sometimes went unnoticed until the very end, as one tutor observed during algebra tasks.

In Year 11 mathematics, revision focused mainly on familiar types, avoiding more difficult or unfamiliar problems from recent HSC practice papers.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner skipped writing out working in multi-step word problems, which made it hard to trace errors and slowed improvement when reviewing with feedback. This approach left gaps unaddressed and made exam preparation feel overwhelming as deadlines approached.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Doonside recently saw a Year 11 student, who used to get stuck on multi-step trigonometry problems, now confidently apply the sine and cosine rules to solve them without prompting.

In a Year 9 session, a student who often rushed through algebra questions is now taking time to connect concepts together and learn from mistakes between lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has started attempting worded maths problems independently instead of waiting for hints—she finished her latest worksheet by applying skills she'd learned in earlier sessions.
