The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence as well as knowledge. When students believe in themselves, they naturally try harder and keep improving. I focus on making learning simple and less intimidating, encouraging curiosity and problem-solving instead of just memorisation, and being supportive so that students know someone…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is allow the student to see that they are so much more than their grades, but also giving them the tools they need to succeed academically, because at the end of the day, their grades will play a big part in the options they will have for future studies. I feel my biggest strength would be my…

It is so important for tutors to adapt their method of teaching to the way the student learns. Every student not only has different needs and difficulties, but learns concepts differently. It is extremely important to regularly re-evaluate the student's objectives. Modifying your approach as a tutor to make the student feel comfortable and…

I would consider skills such as organisation, critical thinking and problem solving strategies to be the most valuable takeaways for the student, especially since the skills will always be useful long-term. I also think a tutor should be able to build up their student's growth mindset, giving the students the mentality and confidence to grow even…

Whilst improving their grades is important, the most important thing a tutor can do is help their student find their love for learning, ensuring that they will push themselves to be curious. A tutor has the opportunity to shape a students' mind, in more ways than one. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching content. A tutor should help a child feel capable--- when students believe in themselves, everything else becomes easier. It's important to break concepts down simply, meet students where they are, and help them move forward step by step without overwhelm.…

Any tutor needs to know that learning can't be forced. What's important is for us to help them to ignite the flames of passion to learn a subject through a fun and interactive session. Which ultimately, helps them to better understand everyday life by applying what they learned. Like how everything can be formulated into equations and how food…

First and foremost, helping them score well for the examinations they are going to sit for. For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in their subjects. Academic impact is a primary objective of a tutor. The result for a student may not always be dramatic, going from F to A+, but it can also involve slow progress. Always staying engaged with the student, periodically inquiring about their comfort in learning the subject, and creating a conducive atmosphere for learning are essential. A tutor must…

Inside Double BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Eva focused on finding the area of triangles and converting tricky fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

In Year 7, Emmanuel tackled review questions on expressions, equations, and inequalities while also refining his problem-solving approach as misconceptions arose.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Isaac practiced multiplication with emphasis on the 2 and 3 times tables and spent time reading analogue clocks to reinforce understanding of time.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 Chemistry student hesitated with back titration and struggled to express key ideas clearly—"she was unable to phrase this concept succinctly and with clarity," noted her tutor. This meant exam responses were incomplete or vague, affecting marks.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student's test performance suffered from weak time management; she often left questions unfinished.

In Year 4, over-reliance on counting boards slowed basic addition and subtraction, making it hard to move beyond simple sums without aids.

For a Year 8 student, skipping steps when rearranging equations led to confusion in algebra tasks and lost working marks.

Recent Achievements

One Double Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who had previously struggled with pH calculations manage to work through multi-step problems independently after some targeted practice, even explaining the difference between strong and weak polyprotic acids.

In Year 8 chemistry, another student who was hesitant with solubility rules last week was able to solve multi-part questions on her own after extra explanation.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has started checking her addition answers by counting in fives—a big shift from past weeks when she wouldn't suggest ways to self-check at all.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Double Bay Central Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Double Bay Public School.
