I think the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student feel capable. It’s not just about explaining the material, it’s about creating an environment where they feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. A great tutor doesn’t just help improve grades; they help build confidence, independence, and a mindset that says,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence as well as knowledge. When students believe in themselves, they naturally try harder and keep improving. I focus on making learning simple and less intimidating, encouraging curiosity and problem-solving instead of just memorisation, and being supportive so that students know someone…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. Over time, I have learnt that my enthusiasm for the subject is contagious, it kindles a love for the subject in the…

I think it is important for tutors to show patience and understanding towards students. It can be frustrating when one struggles to understand a new concept and I want to ensure that the student finds enjoyment in their work rather than a sense of dread toward it. Therefore, I highly emphasize an approach of patience to foster safe and enjoyable…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster independent thinking and create a safe space for questions. A tutor should not only improve grades but also equip them with skills and strategies they can apply beyond the tutoring sessions. One of my key strengths is patience. I take time yo explain concepts clearly and in different…

The most important thing a tutor can do is spark curiosity—once a student is curious, learning becomes easier and more enjoyable. My role is to guide, support, and give them the confidence to keep exploring. My strengths are patience, breaking things into simple steps, and making students feel comfortable asking questions. I also grasp math…

I think understang the uniqueness and different approach that is required for the growth of each individiual student, I had a mentor in my schooling years who use to take subject way beyond my understanding and teach its fundamentals to me. I now have the fundamental understang of these complex topics and can not only teach it,in simple language,…

Make students feel comfortable. The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listening to them to truly understand what their needs and goals are. I also think it is important for a tutor to establish a link with the student, to make the lesson less "formal" and more enjoyable for the student as he/she would learn better if the environment is less stressful. The most important thing a tutor can do is to ensure that the child fully understands the lesson, and finds purpose in it. Many students struggle not because they lack ability, but because they doubt themselves. In this case, it is important for the tutor to encourage students and create a supportive learning environment in a way that helps the student see their progress. It is also important for a tutor to guide the student through a question, rather than just…

Inside DrummoyneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Jess focused on revising for NAPLAN and tackling end-of-year exam questions, building confidence with key assessment formats.

For Year 8, Jess worked through algebra topics including factorisation—particularly rules involving negatives—and also practised finding areas of circles using formulas distinguishing radius from diameter.

Meanwhile, Year 9 lessons included mastering linear relationships by graphing lines with two intercepts and rearranging equations, as well as extending understanding of trigonometry to include sine, cosine, tangent and their inverse functions through textbook examples.

Recent Challenges

Several process challenges were noted across year levels.

In Year 8 maths, Jess left 7 sheets of homework, which meant she missed out on valuable feedback and practice with ratios.

A Year 9 student repeatedly relied on mental calculation for simpler algebra steps but didn't show working—"even if it is a more simple operation that can be performed in her head"—making it hard to trace sign errors when answers were off.

For a Year 10 topic test, one student forgot to check subtraction signs during simplification, leading to repeated mistakes and extra correction time instead of learning new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A Drummoyne tutor noticed one high school student, Jess, has begun to self-correct minor errors in her algebra and now regularly checks her multi-step working—where she previously skipped over mistakes.

Another older student who struggled with statistics earlier in the term showed clear progress, as seen by recent test results that reflected a solid grasp of key concepts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student experienced a breakthrough with times tables after weeks of practice and even explained the "EF procedure" back to the tutor for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balmain Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mark's Catholic Primary School.
