Personal connection would be my important factor in tutoring, having a good basic relationship and being able to build upon that will make communicating to the student much easier. I believe that there is often a barrier between teachers and students in a school system and sometimes that barrier may affect an individual student, it transforms into…

Make them enjoy a subject. as a teacher you can only do so much when it comes to teaching. you can give them all the work, call them, and pester them, but if they don't like it they will never excel in it. I am able to connect to the students. I am young and fun and even ride a motorcycles I play guitar and most games kids no play allowing em to…

I think a tutor should be able to have the necessary resources for a student. Extra learning content that students can’t easily retrieve should be available with tutors. I am in a position to provide those resources. I am patient, and I am kind and try to teach in ways that they will enjoy. I also have tricks that I would love to share since…

A tutor can make the student love to learn new things. A tutor can make life easier for a student by showing him/her that acquiring knowledge is very beneficial and important for prospering in life later on. I can explain my ideas in a really easy way. I am very patient as I can repeat the lesson several times until the student understands. I have…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

The most important thing a tutor can do is improve the confidence of the student. The most important thing to have when walking into an exam is confidence. With great confidence comes greater problem solving skills, and greater creativity. Hence, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student more comfortable and confident…

Think to pass the belief that the student can achieve the goal. It is just the matter of working hard and maybe trying different approach. And also not comparing yourself to other students, because everyone is unique. I, myself, was in a situation where I had very low marks in Math and Science subjects, but I worked hard and I saw my brain change…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. It can be frustrating not being able to figure something out, but it becomes a lot less daunting without extreme expectations. I think my strengths as a tutor lie in my patience and my creativity. It's certainly not an easy task learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in a student. After a tutoring session, the goal should not be for a student to be able to complete their homework. Instead, the student should gain an understanding of the topic such that they can complete future coursework without the help of a tutor. If that…

Assessing the student's strengths and weaknesses is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. This allows the tutor to create a personalized learning plan that is tailored to the student's specific needs and abilities. By identifying the student's strengths, the tutor can build on them to further enhance their understanding…

I think some of the key things a tutor can do for a student include the tutor trying the absolute best to ensure the student understands the subject or any difficulties the student is having with the subject. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to lay a right foundation for the student to learn. The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Be outgoing. The worst thing is for a student to be scared to ask for help because they feel embarrassed. The most important thing for a tutor is that they explicitly explain concepts to a student. This should be done in a way that makes the most intuitive sense to the student. Also, for me, it is essential that a tutor, as well as teaching students, teaches them how to study by themselves and how to teach themselves. This should be done by providing…

Set a path to direct the student. We can't force a knowledge into someone's head. We have to guide them towards achieving a goal, understand how they study and propose the best way for them to achieve what they desire. It's not just about teaching a concept, it's also about teaching them how to learn a concept. The lessons taught must endure and…

Local Reviews

Tutoring commenced as planned in Week 1 of Term 4. I was satisfied with the tutor after interviewing her - I have considerable relevant experience, as a sometime academic & subsequently a senior official, then the principal of a boutique consulting business. More importantly, my Year 9 Selective daughter learnt very quickly from the tutor, whom she respects & likes, coming to understand Trigonometry at last in the first hourly session. After just four of these she is on her way back to where she should be in Maths. In primary school she always came 2nd in her year to a Mathematics genius. In high school she has been held back by personal issues & poor teaching, with only her Year 8 teacher being of any quality. It is wonderful to see her enjoying her Maths again. I look forward o reading her report in a few weeks.
Robert, Dulwich Hill

Inside Dulwich HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Liam focused on addition and subtraction, using number lines and equality statements to strengthen basic arithmetic.

In Year 10, Emily worked through algebraic skills like adding like terms and solving equations involving addition, subtraction, and division.

For Year 11, Jack concentrated on vectors—covering vector addition, subtraction, and constructing diagrams to support understanding of proofs.

Recent Challenges

Homework was often incomplete, limiting their chance to consolidate algebra and coordinate geometry skills outside class.

In Year 11 mathematics, messy working—such as omitting equal signs or cramming steps—made it harder to spot where sign errors occurred; one tutor remarked, "writing numbers neatly and keeping numerators and denominators together would help."

A Year 4 student sometimes avoided starting subtraction tasks if they seemed too hard, guessing instead of writing out attempts.

After setbacks in senior physics, a student lost motivation and hesitated to use feedback or textbook worked examples for revision.

Recent Achievements

A Dulwich Hill tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to skip steps in algebra is now writing out all workings and diagrams neatly, which has led to fewer errors.

In Year 11 maths, Annabelle previously struggled to choose the right trigonometric function but now reliably identifies when to use sin, cos, or tan without prompting.

Meanwhile, during a primary session, Zoe—who often lost focus—settled in after some encouragement and completed her questions independently for the first time this term.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Priscilla is wonderful with both my boys. I would recommend her without hesitation.

WE are very happy with Adam. He is an excellent tutor and he is engaging them both very well

Natalya is progressing really well with her math tutoring. Daniel is an excellent tutor and Natalya feels very comfortable around him. Her enthusiasm for maths has soared which for Don and I is a big step forward in such a short time. Her teacher has already commented on her progress and we have no doubt that her grades will continue to improve over time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design.
