The tutor plays an important role in teaching the student that they care about their academics and them as a person. Some kids feel hopeless in some subjects at school, due to bad grades or teachers that have other students to focus on, and believe that there is no way to improve because of that. Through the one-on-one experience with tutors, the…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to be open to criticism and feedback from students. It is important to create a personalised experience for each student in order to provide them with the Best support system for them that pushes them to their full potential. Words of positivity can also be necessary to allow students to progress further…

I think, the main part is understanding. Tutor should help students in understanding of the concepts and their purpose. Secondly, tutor should be understanding, so that he/she serves students according to their needs as different students have different ways of visualising things. Thirdly, tutor should help in planning of the subject so that…

I believe a good tutor is making the student understand what they are learning but not how to get good result in their exam. Base of my past experience in attending tuition, my tutors tend to explain mathematics theorem in detail so we could understand them better and not only just to memorise when to use the formula. Also I believe practice makes…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is be supportive. Students are already frustrated when they do not understand something, hence we do not need to add to that by being frustrated at them. In addition, a tutor needs to be flexible. This allows one to better tailor the program to the student's needs and the student's strengths. I…

I believe that creating a comfortable environment for the student is one of the most important things a tutor can do. This is to ensure the student can gain confidence to ask questions to further understand the logic behind answers, as I find this helps them be more flexible in exams. The most important role that a tutor can play in the betterment of students is to help them build self-efficacy as the "can-do" attitude solves multiple problems. The self believe helps the student gain confidence which will eventually play a role in their academic learning. The motivation of being successful in gaining mathematical skills often…

Tutors have to be cooperative and empathetic to teach students. Moreover, they need to embody leadership qualities. Bring them self-confidence. Because as a former student, this is the most important thing I got from my tutor. Students who take tuition often do so because they lack confidence in their grades, or even receive pressure from others such as parents, and so can become agitated or even bored with their studies, and thus engage in self-denial. If you…

Local Reviews

Tutoring commenced as planned in Week 1 of Term 4. I was satisfied with the tutor after interviewing her - I have considerable relevant experience, as a sometime academic & subsequently a senior official, then the principal of a boutique consulting business. More importantly, my Year 9 Selective daughter learnt very quickly from the tutor, whom she respects & likes, coming to understand Trigonometry at last in the first hourly session. After just four of these she is on her way back to where she should be in Maths. In primary school she always came 2nd in her year to a Mathematics genius. In high school she has been held back by personal issues & poor teaching, with only her Year 8 teacher being of any quality. It is wonderful to see her enjoying her Maths again. I look forward o reading her report in a few weeks.

Inside Dulwich HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Liam focused on addition and subtraction, using number lines and equality statements to strengthen basic arithmetic.

In Year 10, Emily worked through algebraic skills like adding like terms and solving equations involving addition, subtraction, and division.

For Year 11, Jack concentrated on vectors—covering vector addition, subtraction, and constructing diagrams to support understanding of proofs.

Recent Challenges

Homework was often incomplete, limiting their chance to consolidate algebra and coordinate geometry skills outside class.

In Year 11 mathematics, messy working—such as omitting equal signs or cramming steps—made it harder to spot where sign errors occurred; one tutor remarked, "writing numbers neatly and keeping numerators and denominators together would help."

A Year 4 student sometimes avoided starting subtraction tasks if they seemed too hard, guessing instead of writing out attempts.

After setbacks in senior physics, a student lost motivation and hesitated to use feedback or textbook worked examples for revision.

Recent Achievements

A Dulwich Hill tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to skip steps in algebra is now writing out all workings and diagrams neatly, which has led to fewer errors.

In Year 11 maths, Annabelle previously struggled to choose the right trigonometric function but now reliably identifies when to use sin, cos, or tan without prompting.

Meanwhile, during a primary session, Zoe—who often lost focus—settled in after some encouragement and completed her questions independently for the first time this term.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Priscilla is wonderful with both my boys. I would recommend her without hesitation.

WE are very happy with Adam. He is an excellent tutor and he is engaging them both very well

Natalya is progressing really well with her math tutoring. Daniel is an excellent tutor and Natalya feels very comfortable around him. Her enthusiasm for maths has soared which for Don and I is a big step forward in such a short time. Her teacher has already commented on her progress and we have no doubt that her grades will continue to improve over time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design.
