I think one of the most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student is shaping the student's mindset about their capability of accomplishing something. A tutor should always be passionate about high achievement. The tutor should continuously convey to the student that a goal cannot be not achieved if effort is invested and hustle the…

The most important skill is to have a high level of communication skills. Throughout the communication between the tutor and the students/parents, the tutor can decide what is the best pathway to lead the student. Also, the students/parents can express their needs through communication and achieve their goals and be satisfied. My strength is…

Firstly, I believe the philosophy of "Teaching to fish rather than giving a fish. " It suggests that the tutor has a responsibility to inspire her students to take further exploration in the subject and cultivate good learning habits. Secondly, I think encouragement is essential in tutoring. Being as a chemistry tutor, I would let my student know…

Inside DunlopTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Caledon worked on the fundamentals of geometry, deriving and applying formulas for volume and surface area of various prisms and spheres using diagrams.

In Year 10, Anise focused on differentiating compound functions with the chain rule and extended this to complex algebraic manipulation in more challenging problems.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Amit concentrated on his Digital Technology assignment, making edits based on feedback and starting to improve areas identified as needing development.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue for a Year 9 student, who "hadn't finished the homework assigned last week" and then "forgot to do last week's homework again," limiting opportunities for independent practice and slowing progress on applying formulas.

In senior years, one Year 11 student frequently hesitated to write out algebraic working, which led to missed sign errors—"he struggled a little with the signs of the terms, remembering the plus and minus."

Another high schooler sometimes brought no example problems from class, making it harder to target revision; as noted: "the biggest issue this week was there was no new work."

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Dunlop recently noticed some strong learning shifts among high school students. Anise, in Year 12, went from struggling with logarithms to confidently identifying which log law to use—even handling complex, all-variable questions without prompting.

Caledon, a Year 10 student who used to hesitate on multi-step algebra problems, now solves them independently and can quickly recall techniques covered last term. He is solving multi-step problems alone, showing a clear leap in confidence and skill.

Meanwhile, Amit (Year 9) has begun structuring his essays more clearly and now drafts with far less hesitation than before; he recently completed a writing task with only minimal feedback needed.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Vik is doing very well, my daughter is very happy. She would like to continue with him.

The tutoring is going really well with Jacob. Both Thomasine and Luke are really happy with him. They say he is really good and gives loads of examples. High praise indeed. Jonathan and I are delighted as well. We find him always on time, if not early, so far and he is very polite and easy to talk with. So thank you very much.

All good! Boys very happy with Josh. He has certainly helped their confidence and that is the start to better marks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kippax Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brindabella Christian College - Charnwood campus.
