Explain concepts well and set a good foundation for their learning. Additionally, the most important thing a tutor should do is encourage and teach them how to learn by themselves. Instead of only teaching the necessary information, they should try to teach students how to have fun while learning in order for them to be self-motivated, a highly…

The most important thing as a tutor is to help them understand the importance of English and mathematics. If something is unclear, it is my duty to research and resolve the issue so the student can learn correctly to progress in the future. If the student enjoys a certain subject, he/she may potentially be a passionate teacher in the future. As a…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. I am an expert in Math and Programming and their academic content -- I know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out. I…

The most important thing is to not only tell them how to do a problem but also tips and tricks on how to efficiently and correctly answer a range of questions over and over whilst also giving them exam tips and tricks for them to minimise errors and mistakes. Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. In the field of applied linguistics, we call it 'boost input by producing output'. I believe…

Be calm and understand that everyone thinks different, and just because you or another students gets it, the other student could struggle with it. Also find the particular concept or idea that a student cannot connect. Moreover, to track their process and be sure to work on their mistakes continuously. I worked in a tutoring center this year,…

Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. Having being tutored myself, I didn't respond as well with someone who could not meet me at my level than I did with a tutor who I felt I could relate to and trust. I am calm and caring, which I think is really important in tutoring, especially when…

Don’t make students memorize, make them understand it in their own way. A lot of the topics that are taught can actually be related to previous topics. If they can see that connection between each topic, then understanding tends to become easier. Also, we shouldn’t put too much pressure on them. That means don’t explain too quickly, but…

One of the most crucial things, which a tutor can do to benefit a student is to create a learning space that has a good atmosphere with support and understanding. Not only to foster understanding, but building confidence is essential. I think the most important thing is not to do the questions for them but to guide them as they do them so that in the future they will be able to do them by themselves. Giving certain little tricks and clues to help them remember certain things as well can be good as it will help them to remember certain concepts. I think because I also somewhat…

The most important thing a tutor could do for a student is show them that every student responds to education in the same way or at the same pace and whichever way they process information is perfectly normal. The goal is to maximize learning, in the way that works best for the students. I have seen this significantly reduce academic frustrations…

Listen. I find that listening to why the student might be struggling or what they have missed is the first and most important step to helping a student. Secondly a tutor should be able to adapt. I believe the most vital thing a tutor can do for a student is to give an explanation. We tutors exist to answer and explain questions that a lesson can't provide. Generally, it is best that a student is comfortable asking questions without being judged by classmates and that is the foundation of learning. Not to mention, each tutor might have a…

Inside East LindfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student James focused on consolidating money calculations and tackling worded multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 9, Trai worked through plotting linear equations from tables and practised converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages while also reviewing rounding strategies.

For Year 11, Mario completed exam revision by practising logarithm questions alongside trigonometry and quadratic factorisation problems to strengthen his understanding before assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, a student frequently left working out blank when solving money questions and converting cents to dollars; as noted, "we didn't have much time at the end to cover it," which led to confusion when reviewing.

In Year 8 algebra, another student avoided writing steps and often erased work, resulting in repeated sign errors—"he rushes his work and does not write down his working making it easy to make mistakes."

For a Year 11 probability test, incomplete homework meant weaker recall of methods for combinations; missing practice resulted in stumbling on exam-style tasks under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Lindfield noticed a big shift for a Year 10 student who, after struggling with bearings questions last week, managed to get nearly all of them right on her recent test.

Another high schooler showed real independence by solving for x without prompting by the end of the session—previously, he'd always needed step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to confuse fraction placement could now accurately order fractions himself, finishing up by explaining his reasoning out loud for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lindfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Lindfield East Public School.
