I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

I believe a tutor can do for a student is to help them in any possible way. I have worked as a private tutor and I believe that there are a wide range of things a tutor can do for a student. First is to be able to teach well and not be too harsh on the student as it creates discouragement. Being able to communicate and be patient will allow the…

First and Foremost, teaching every topic, every concept as clearly as possible and ensuring that the student has actually understood it. A tutor should also ensure that he is giving the student his full and complete attention during a class. I can explain topics very easily and precisely. I am great with giving examples and it is my favourite way…

I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. It might take a different approach than they initially thought of but my job is to show them these different approaches. I am aware that it is sometimes extremely difficult to understand information when it is presented in only one…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to promote confidence in a student. After a tutoring session, the goal should not be for a student to be able to complete their homework. Instead, the student should gain an understanding of the topic such that they can complete future coursework without the help of a tutor. If that…

Inside EastlakesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Regan worked on mastering probability concepts, including calculating probabilities and practicing with targeted homework for an upcoming test.

In Year 10, Sara explored creative writing through character development and plot structure, then shifted to planning a discursive presentation by mapping out weekly goals and selecting suitable texts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student tackled advanced calculus topics such as integration and the application of differentiation, focusing on solving optimisation problems using worked examples.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 English, a student's creative writing lacked depth in characterisation—characters felt one-dimensional, limiting the emotional impact of her stories.

For a Year 12 essay, missing or incomplete homework meant feedback on textual analysis and flow could not be provided, delaying improvement. As noted by one tutor: "Homework was sent however was not completed. For feedback and improvement it is extremely crucial she finishes homework."

Meanwhile, a senior maths student struggled to select appropriate formulas in new topics; this confusion often arose when revision focused only on familiar question types rather than broadening problem-solving skills for exams.

Recent Achievements

One Eastlakes tutor noticed a Year 11 student who started the term hesitant to ask questions is now actively seeking clarification on tricky essay topics, even challenging interpretations and linking themes independently—something he'd avoided before.

In another session, a high school maths student who was unsure about maxima and minima at first worked through practice HSC-style problems until she could solve them confidently on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently began writing down feedback after lessons without being prompted and asked for extra practice questions to improve—a big shift from previously staying quiet during reviews.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mascot Library (incl. the George Hanna Memorial Museum)—or at your child's school (with permission), like Eastlakes Public School.
