I think the most important thing a maths tutor can do is to equip a student with critical thinking skills relating to HOW to approach a problem. If a student can frame a problem, or recognize which tools are appropriate, then the rest becomes much more manageable. - I have a good knowledge of subjects, and their applications. - I can often…

There are three things that I would consider to be the most important would be building confidence, providing clarity but also foster independent learning. Firstly, many students struggle, not because they lack ability but because doubt themselves, thus by acknowledging progress no matter how small will help students believe in their own…

I think the most important things a maths tutor can do is to instill confidence in a student. In the past, I had dealt with tough and frustrated students with patience and empathy. I try to make a student become confident by being a supportive friend more than a tutor. I do my best to create a comfortable environment where students can open up,…

The most important thing a maths tutor could do for a student is to make them more passionate and confident about their learning, as this will transition well past the tutoring period and into their future academics. Additionally, a tutor should help the student build good study habits that they can maintain independently. I'm very patient with…

Not only is knowing the content extremely important, but the way tutors teach the content is more important. Every student has their own needs, and a maths tutor must recognise that some teaching strategies might work for some but not work for others. My strengths is my teaching style. I believe my ability to connect with the student allows the…

I think it's okay for tutors to make mistakes while teaching, but these mistakes have to be found out and clearly explained to the students afterwards. Hence the most important thing I think as a maths tutor is to be sincere and responsible. I am academically excellent on Maths and I am fully confident on teaching this subject since I achieved…

I believe persistence is key when learning mathematics. I have found that even if a mathematical concept is completely alien to me, as long as I kept reading and kept trying, I would always find I understood it. To show patience and know students do have the ability to understand concepts, would mean a great deal to their progress. My strengths…

One of the most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is to pinpoint their current understanding of the area of the subject in question. A student (or student's parents) hires tutors to teach them what they cannot learn from teachers at school. As such, the teachers must be failing to accommodate for the conflicting teaching/learning styles. I consider instilling a growth mindset into a student is very important as that is the only way a student will see growth and start to succeed. With a positive mindset, students can embrace mistakes and see them as a learning curve to success. Additionally, building confidence in a student is also very important as it helps them overcome…

Inside Eight Mile PlainsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mikyla worked on confidently substituting values into algebraic expressions and practiced combining like terms, especially with both positive and negative coefficients.

Year 10 student Lara focused on understanding the laws of indices and surds, as well as solving a range of quadratic equations through manipulation and problem-solving strategies.

For Year 12, Savio tackled exam revision in differentiation—specifically limits, tangents, and curve analysis—using worked examples to consolidate key calculus skills ahead of assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing a Research Investigation in Physics found it difficult to organize ideas coherently and clarify the task, as seen when narrowing down an evaluable research question.

In Year 10 Maths, one student tended to "attempt to memorise the content rather than understanding it first," which led to forgetting key processes during revision.

Another, in Year 8 Algebra, skipped writing out steps for negatives and squared values—"It's better to write down the working steps out than doing mental maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student admitted procrastinating on exam prep; practice was left until the last minute, impacting confidence under timed conditions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Eight Mile Plains noticed that one Year 11 student, after initially struggling to structure her research investigation, was able to clarify her research question and engage much more actively during the session.

In a high school maths lesson, another student began openly asking for help when stuck on tangents and differentiation, rather than hesitating or guessing—showing a real shift towards self-advocacy.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who previously mixed up "greater than" and "less than" symbols remembered the difference this week by using a new visual trick and completed all comparison problems correctly without reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Garden City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Warrigal Road State School.
