I consider being empathetic and adaptive for students is highly important. Being empathetic of your students struggles and not putting them down for not understanding is the most important thing a tutor can do for them to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in their learning. Adaptability is also a key component for a tutor as not every…

Provide a safe space for the student to make mistakes without judgement. They don’t always have this at school with their peers looking on. Provide high level materials that don’t just duplicate those from school or in generic books. I really think about the resources we use to make sure they are the right level, challenging and have stretch…

The most important things a tutor can do for their student is make themselves alaways available to help their student, whether it is a full lesson or just a quick question over the phone, just being a constant support to the student is of such high value. Change their relationship with studies. Education should never feel like a chore. It can be fun and invigorating. Knowing more about the world you live in and how things around us work and exist is stimulating for the mind and soul. Being able to transfer that way of thinking to a student is easily the most important and rewarding thing one can…

The most important thing in my opinion is to not only be able to guide students to the correct answer, but also make them feel accomplished and enjoy the process of knowing nothing to all the knowledge they need in school. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to be self-sufficient - I'm a firm believer that anybody can study by themselves, and that tutors are there to help the student bounce ideas off and help break down hard to digest pieces of education. I believe my main strength as a tutor is that for every student, I try to…

Helping students build confidence is arguably the most important and beneficial thing a tutor can do. I firmly believe that confidence is the building block of success, and that, by bringing it out of a student, a tutor can unlock the student's full potential, and empower them to expand their skills and capabilities. Volunteering as an instructor…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them that mistakes are part of learning. It is very easy to become disheartened if something is difficult, but mistakes help us to grow and allow us to see how far we have come once we achieve our work. According to me the most important thing for the tutor is to understand that not all students understand concepts the same way and sense when students do not understand something and willingly try another approach of presenting the material to help the student. With this approach a tutor can make a difference in the student’s learning. I believe…

To reveal the simple nature of (what may seem) complex. Once a student understands that they have the ability to unravel something they thought was out of their reach, their confidence and newfound ability create a framework for smart study skills and eagerness to learn in the future. Those two qualities are necessary for the independent learning…

Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Karina is lovely and I think she will work out just fine. Amelia is very happy with her  and they seem to be getting along fine. I hadnt realised Amelia was so far behind, and am actually glad she asked me to find help.

We are really happy with Hayoli as a tutor.  I don't like to compare but she is 100% better at explaining things than the last tutor.  The difference is quite amazing actually.  She is very efficient, just comes straight in and gets straight to work.  No chit chat at all (which I don't mind).  She actually brings in resources that she thinks will help Amy and seems like she has a plan, rather than just turning up with nothing prepared.  I can highly recommend Hayoli. Thankyou for finding Hayoli for us.  She is amazing,

Thank you for the email. I just want to tell you how happy we are with Lisa. Because of that two hour block right before his math half year exam, his grade has already improved. I am ver impressed with Lisa professionalism and her preparedness. Andrew enjoys math tutoring with Lisa.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
