Obviously, a tutor is there to help students with particular topics however, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to teach a student how to tackle any difficult topics on their own. Sometimes tutors won't be available, or they may be in a situation that makes acquiring a tutor a bit difficult, so preparing those students for those…

Help him get to ease with the course, make it not feel like a burden but something the pupil has control over, allow him to see his strengths and focus on the knowledge he is gaining from it, and how he can benefit from it. Algebra is useful in so many fields but kids don't understand that thus don't pay attention, and learn it just to forget…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to aim to build a positive and supportive relationship with their student. By creating a safe and welcoming learning environment, students are more likely to feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help. Overall, a tutor should be supportive, knowledgeable, and adaptable to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to become their friend. Children are sometimes uncomfortable with teachers and are unable to fully explain where they struggle. However, if we are able to get them to open up we would be able to better assist them in improving their grades. A student who is comfortable in the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inculcate the trust in them by interacting in a positive manner and to give a complete understanding of the subject being taught. Kids' attention span are short and I think the most important thing a tutor can do for the tutees/students is to be compassionate. Compassion will cover patience and understanding the reason why we are teaching. Kids will be kids and they can get naughty and noisy at times. But it is and will always be part of tutoring, you just need to calmly get…

I think the tutor's presence, being there for the student to offer help is an important thing a tutor can do for a student. Sometimes parents can get busy and school can be stressful. Inside EmertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Sidney worked on recognising and ordering three-digit numbers, skip counting by twos, fives, and tens, and using place value to build and partition numbers with hands-on activities.

Year 10 student Omar revised non-linear equations through targeted worksheet problems, then shifted to English by brainstorming essay ideas for a discursive writing task based on key scenes from the film Pleasantville.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex focused on surds—converting between index and surd form and simplifying expressions—as well as expanding brackets with surds and rationalising denominators.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often overcomplicated basic operations, forgetting steps in simple algebra when moving quickly to advanced surds work—"he sometimes forgets what to do when faced with simple operations and gets caught up in doing the more advanced things."

In a Year 8 exam setting, careless mistakes crept in due to difficulty maintaining focus and managing time under pressure; answers were left unchecked, costing marks.

Meanwhile, a primary student showed eagerness but misread multi-step instructions on number tasks, sometimes answering only part of what was asked before moving on. These habits led to missed marks and unfinished revision worksheets.

Recent Achievements

One Emerton tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to get stuck simplifying surds is now confidently converting between surd and power form, and even rationalising denominators with less hesitation.

In another high school session, a student who typically relied on graphing software finished all his classwork using only manual calculations—showing new independence.

Meanwhile, Sidney in Year 3 surprised her tutor by quickly learning to count off the decade without a counting chart after struggling at first; she also spotted number patterns many peers miss. She wrapped up the lesson choosing to complete blank worksheets independently for homework.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mt Druitt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Emerton Public School.
