A tutor not only helps the student get better grades in examination but also helps them understand the core concepts of the subjects that can be applied to everyday life and also encourages a balance between work and play. As a mental health first aider, I truly believe in the importance of maintaining a good balance and being a good listener to…

The tutor can make the learning experience more comfortable and enjoyable for the student I believe I can make it more fun and relaxing when it comes to studying which can enable the children to grasp the syllabus better. As I am still a student too at the University of Melbourne, I am able to understand the struggles children face with learning…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I am always willing to listen. Teaching a student is not lecturing them and assuming that they are a sponge and can absorb everything you say. I believe that to teach a student well, you must be willing to listen to them, and understand how they learn so that you can provide the best learning experience as possible. I want to be a tutor so that I…

Whilst ensuring the student learns or develops topics/skills is important, fostering an interest and curiosity in the subject is more important in my opinion. Through the support of teachers and students in my schooling I have grown a deep interest in maths, science and literature, which makes study and learning these subjects easy! I am patient,…

Studying techniques, creating good habits and of course, feedback for improvements! These are the important aspects that a tutor should show their students. There is much more to learning than parroting back facts - information needs to absorbed, regurgitated, reused in a practical sense. I have much hands-on experience in using my chosen skills -…

I think the most important thing as a tutor is to share your passion with student. The most effective learning occurs when the student is engaged, invested and passionate in the subject you are teaching. Forming a professional, friendly relationship with the student is key in achieving this. Although improvements in a certain topic of maths…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is believe in each student, and provide a constant support and show up each week. All these add in maintaining a healthy relationship and connection with the student. I believe providing a comfortable place for the student greatly increases the actual learning that is able to take place. It…

For me the most important thing a tutor can do is create a comfortable and encouraging environment where the student feels supported to be honest about what they’re struggling with and share how they think. I’m good at being a patient tutor that listens to how a student thinks through problems so we can work together to understand why…

The most important thing would be to push them to be passionate and to be interested in what they are doing, and to help them want to improve at what they're learning. I find myself to be very relatable to students, likely due to my age, and able to convey information in a way that makes it easy to understand for a younger…

Help improve their self-confidence and self-reliance through introducing tools that will help the student foster healthy and effective study habits of their own. To not make them feel dumb. Students should be able to safely ask their questions without insecurity or fear of being looked down on. I'm try to be patient and understanding. To me the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate, dedicated, understanding and patient. We need to be able to relate to how the students feels to truly be able to guide them at their own pace of learning. Being impatient and giving up on students will only lower the motivation and self-confidence of the student,…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build a student's confidence. It's not just about understanding content, it's about helping students believe in their ability to tackle challenges independently. A tutor should first of all help the student to build his self-confidence and self-esteem. Appreciating small efforts and hard work of the student will allow him to be more confident and continue working in that direction. This will help him not only academically but also in later stages of life where he will learn the importance of perseverance…

The most pivotal thing is support. A teacher is essentially a mentor, and mentors are supposed to provide encouragement to the students and make the students fall in love with the subjects. A teacher should assess the performance of the students on a regular basis to ensure the goals of the students are being met. This involves testing them…

Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
