The most important thing of a tutor in my opinion is to foster genuine passion for learning for the students. I believe that the academic success of any student should be self-paced, and the tutor could only help them if they face a too-challenging problem or cannot come up with a plan to achieve their success. Passion to help students, I…

I reckon the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student is spending time with them, listening, sympathising, effectively communicating and building connections with them. School curriculum is not designed for any particular students, so many of them can't study the way they find the most suitable and easiest for them, resulting in the need…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

Understanding the weak points and listening to their problems helps establish trust between the tutor and the student. This makes a tutor approachable. A tutor should never make their students feel that any question is dumb. Imparting the idea that all questions are good questions and students should never fear while asking anything is one of the…

The most important thing is to gain a core understanding of the topic, and not just a surface level rote learning of how to solve problems. It's also important to have an understanding of each student and to recognise when to push them and when they've hit a wall (mentally). I think my greatest strength is my approachability and flexibility. I do…

From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be there with them, really listening and understanding. When we connect on a personal level and show genuine interest, it sparks their curiosity and makes them want to learn more. As a tutor, my goal is to light that fire within them, to make them excited about the subject and eager to…

I believe it is motivating and teaching the student how to get the most out of their time studying in and outside of their tutoring session. Not only will this mean they learn more but Increasing ones ability to learn means the student will enjoy studying more (as if feels like they're making progress). I think there are 3 factors which would…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them skills they can use in life. It's not just about teaching them how to do a single problem, it's how to solve problems down the track. It's also about giving them the confidence in themselves, being confident means they will be less stressed and be able to do their best…

A tutor can always assist a student to help understand all of their basic structural and systematic questions and problems. Also a tutor's guidance should inspire the student to work with dedication. In general, I believe that the best way to teach Maths/Science is in a way which the student understands the concepts rather than just giving the student a method to produce an answer, which is how these subjects are commonly taught. 1. Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Daniel revised index laws and logarithmic functions, focusing on simplifying expressions and using worked examples.

In Year 10, Emily practised sketching curves of quartic and cubic functions as well as reviewing plans for next year's topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jack explored integration by recognition and definite integrals, applying these skills to area under curves with step-by-step guidance.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with interpreting worded questions in maths, often feeling stuck before the process "clicked." As a tutor noted, "she needs a lot of work on interpreting worded questions," leading to hesitation and incomplete answers.

In VCE Maths Methods (Year 11), another student was visibly unconfident despite correct working, pausing with "I don't know" even when on track—this self-doubt slowed progress and led to unnecessary rechecking.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 arithmetic, one child showed reluctance to attempt multiplication problems independently, sometimes saying they "can't be bothered," which meant fewer chances to reinforce number sense during practice.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who, after initially finding bearings problems confusing, now approaches them independently and solves worded simultaneous equations without needing guidance.

In Year 10, another student who used to hesitate with worded questions is now able to break down linear rule problems clearly and even constructs formulas on her own during lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has become much more comfortable with long division; after working through examples together, she now completes similar problems confidently by herself.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thomas Attard has been great, Max likes him and seems to be making progress and we are happy with the service.

We are extremely pleased with Hilario and would be happy to recommend him to anyone. Alison is a bit picky and Maths is a subject she hates but feedback from her has been really positive. She commented this morning that if her school teachers were like him, she wouldn't have been having issues with Maths.

I am really happy with Gabriele and the confidence she is providing the girls in their maths.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fairfield Primary School.
