The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him the problem solving skills, and motivate him to apply his skills on any problem he faces. After gaining experience with several types of personalities, I am now a tutor that understands how the student thinks. I motivate the student to figure out the solutions himself in a fun…

I believe it is empathy and actively trying to build a relationship with a student. Learning does not come naturally for all students, therefore, understanding their needs is crucial. Asking simple questions like how they're feeling or how school was is also a great way to check up on their well-being. This fosters a deeper connection so they…

The most important thing I can do for my students is to build their confidence and create a supportive learning environment. I want them to feel comfortable asking questions, understand concepts clearly, and develop the skills to learn independently. Firstly, I would mention patience as my key strength. I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to show them that studying can be fun. Although it can be frustrating for students to struggle at particular topics or questions, I have learnt how to make sessions less stressful by trying to use various worksheets or methods of teaching to suit the student's needs. I have also…

The most important thing a tutor can do is analysis about the student and giving him/her assignments according to his level. A tutor has to understand that each and every student is different in terms of memory or grasping power. My strength is that i can see Maths as a student's point of view, so its easy for me to teach them from basics to…

Beside academically helping a student, I believe being a strong support network is a really important thing as a tutor to fulfill. Knowing something is a whole story, but teaching what I know is a completely different level. The most important thing is that tutors are able to summarise while teaching and ensure the repetition in each lesson. Also, maintaining a healthy relationship with students is significant for both parents' care and students' comfortable learning…

A successful teacher never lets a student feel like they cannot achieve their goals. The goal can be anything from solving a problem to passing the course or even their career goals. Listen to their ideas and help them realise how they can be moulded to fit the criteria that is set for them to meet. This is also coming from my own perspective of what I'd expect, as most times teachers impose their ideas on students and they are left alone to not be able to think for themselves. I can explain concepts quite well, and I make…

Not only can tutors help build up a students' confidence in areas they are particularly weak in, but they can also give insight into what is to come in further years of school and how to prepare for such content. I believe I am good at breaking down harder concepts into individual relatable, easy to understand components to teach separately, then…

Inside Fairfield HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Andrew worked through different subtraction strategies and tackled word problems involving money, as well as breaking numbers into tens and ones to start the topic of length using tables.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving equations with brackets on both sides and practiced algebraic fraction equations, then moved into identifying trigonometric ratios in triangles.

For Year 10, Jade revised quadratic equations—using factorising—and worked with surface area and volume by calculating perimeters and areas for composite shapes such as rectangles and triangles.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue across several years.

For example, a Year 9 student "attempted homework minutes before our session—only half was completed, the rest forgotten."

In senior levels, students preparing for trigonometry or algebra tests sometimes left revision incomplete, leading to last-minute stress and gaps in recall ("was only notified during class that a yearly exam was occurring tomorrow").

Fatigue and lack of motivation were common in Years 10–12, with one tutor noting, "He was very tired and lost focus multiple times; homework was not attempted."

Missed assignments often meant less time spent on feedback and consolidation.

Recent Achievements

One Fairfield Heights tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now comfortably brings up questions during lessons, making it easier to address misunderstandings on the spot.

In Year 8 maths, a student managed to complete all their homework this week and caught most of their earlier errors without prompting—something they struggled with last term.

Meanwhile, a primary school student finally worked through subtraction strategies independently after weeks of needing step-by-step guidance; this time, he finished the worksheet on his own without waiting for hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Smithfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gertrude's Catholic Primary School.
