I have developed my own teaching/tutoring philosophy. I call it the 4CE philosophy (pronounced Foresee). It consists of five tenets: 1- Coaching/Coordination 2-…

I'm very good at handling situations where students struggle on certain topics and where I can then guide them step by step so…

Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each class is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, you’ll feel you’re making a real…

To make the students be clear of the basics which helps the students in the long run and also to be polite with them as not all students have the same level of understanding, and each student has different pace at which they learn so we need to give them as much time as possible to learn better. First and foremost, tutor should build the confidence of students by motivating and pointing out their areas of expertise. This can be done through identifying their strengths and weakness and their learning styles. Additionally, tutor should be able to use variety of strategies instead of relying only one way of explanation. For Example, if a…

Apart from only teaching the textbook content, I like to counsel them as to the importance of education and how its going to help them in the future by encouraging them to do better. Tutors need to give the students a short break of about 5-10 mins in between so that they don't get over worked, as the situation demands. Both of this helps the…

The effective tutor aims way beyond just being a good tutor. It is essential tutors always point out the good achievements of students as much as they make note of their mistakes. Providing encouragement should go beyond the work completed in lessons and a tutor should often check in on how students are coping and provide positive encouragement…

Inside Fairfield HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Andrew worked through different subtraction strategies and tackled word problems involving money, as well as breaking numbers into tens and ones to start the topic of length using tables.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving equations with brackets on both sides and practiced algebraic fraction equations, then moved into identifying trigonometric ratios in triangles.

For Year 10, Jade revised quadratic equations—using factorising—and worked with surface area and volume by calculating perimeters and areas for composite shapes such as rectangles and triangles.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue across several years.

For example, a Year 9 student "attempted homework minutes before our session—only half was completed, the rest forgotten."

In senior levels, students preparing for trigonometry or algebra tests sometimes left revision incomplete, leading to last-minute stress and gaps in recall ("was only notified during class that a yearly exam was occurring tomorrow").

Fatigue and lack of motivation were common in Years 10–12, with one tutor noting, "He was very tired and lost focus multiple times; homework was not attempted."

Missed assignments often meant less time spent on feedback and consolidation.

Recent Achievements

One Fairfield Heights tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now comfortably brings up questions during lessons, making it easier to address misunderstandings on the spot.

In Year 8 maths, a student managed to complete all their homework this week and caught most of their earlier errors without prompting—something they struggled with last term.

Meanwhile, a primary school student finally worked through subtraction strategies independently after weeks of needing step-by-step guidance; this time, he finished the worksheet on his own without waiting for hints from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Smithfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gertrude's Catholic Primary School.
