My relatively young age gives me this ability to connect with students differently than older tutors. I had the chance to experience it from my (young) Physics teacher at High-School. He really helped me understand the power that a tutor can have on your academic path. I think the most important part of being a tutor is the ability to make the…

I think it is important to never give up on the student and to constantly encourage the student in their learning, no matter how complicated a unit of work may be. As a student myself I understand the importance of being surrounded by people that want to support you in your learning. I am an excellent listener and have an immense amount of…

Tutors ought to make themselves available and ready to support students. If they present themselves to students as approachable and knowledgeable, then students will feel comfortable asking questions and also feel ready to trust in the supportive answers and feedback a tutor gives. I trust that everyone who feels comfortable to apply to be a…

Help him to go further and improve himself by providing better advice than a classroom teacher. As a tutor, I would be able to focus on my student to understand his strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. With this knowledge the tutor could provide advices focused on how to correct the student and allow him to have better scores easily. I'm…

While the goals of every student are individual and varied, and any tutor should adjust their style accordingly, I believe there are a few things a tutor can do for any student. They can provide a space where a student feels safe and comfortable expressing themselves, inspire the student to feel confident in their skills and give the student any…

Patience and humour during the tutorial. A true interest in their situation. Listen to their way of thinking, reflecting back both the helpful and harmful logic patterns. Make them feel capable, not overwhelmed but stretched enough to feel they are achieving - this builds confidence. Keep the subject fresh and exciting, go outside the…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in them. To trust that the students do have the capabilities of learning and figuring out problems on their own and that they can grow. Giving the students space while still being there to push them in the right direction is the best way to help a student as we want the…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is to encourage a love of learning by helping the student see that they are already intelligent and have the capabilities to excel in their coursework if they apply themselves. First, it is essential that a tutor provides support tailored to that student's needs, learning process, and interests. Second, a tutor must approach sessions with patience and understanding, while avoiding negativity and behavior that may discourage their student. Overall, I think creating an environment where a student feels seen and heard by…

Especially for younger students, I believe that it is important to not only teach the subject, but to lead by example to influence the children to adopt good values such as kindness, patience and tenacity. I can be strict or friendly depending on the needs of the student, so each student's experience will be different in order for them to realise…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

Ensuring your student is feeling comfortable and confident to try new things is paramount. A student needs to understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process. They need to feel safe and comfortable to make mistakes. I also try to incorporate the interests of a student into learning where possible. E.g. turning a math problem…

After the first session I gave Matt some feedback about Mia (via Text). Matt was open to my feedback about Mia’s learning style, and I feel he listened and implemented during the second session. Mia walked away feeling more confident/ comfortable after the second session.

Inside FawknerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Harry concentrated on algebra skills, working through expressions and equations to build confidence.

For Year 10, recent sessions addressed data distributions by finding the five number summary (including IQR, median, Q1, and Q3), constructing box plots, and applying the 68–95–99.7% rule for normal distributions.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student practised multiplication using area models and explored equivalent fractions through hands-on activities.

Recent Challenges

In Year 12 General Maths, one student struggled to locate formulas in a disorganised bound reference book, leading to wasted time during practice SACs—"he spent several minutes flipping pages for the right formula."

In a Year 10 statistics lesson, another student relied heavily on calculators and spreadsheets rather than practicing manual quartile calculations, risking gaps in understanding under exam conditions.

A primary student frequently left homework incomplete and needed prompting to edit written work; when asked to revise spelling errors, "he understood what was wrong but didn't correct it without help," resulting in repeated mistakes on similar tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Fawkner tutor recently noticed Charlize, a Year 12 student, move from confusion to confidently identifying outliers and calculating interquartile ranges using box plots—something she struggled with at the start.

In Year 8 maths, Emmanuel now works through new concepts after just one example and has begun tackling similar questions independently instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, Alex in primary school is showing real initiative: he self-corrects punctuation errors during writing tasks and is starting to choose more complex sentence structures on his own. Last session, he finished his letter draft without needing reminders about capital letters or full stops.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Pippa is very happy with Dexter. Her tutoring style is very effective and Pippa had excellent results in her mid-year exams.

Sam's first session with Wahidah went really well. He really liked her and responded well to her teaching.

Riria had a great first session with Derek. Riria found Derek to be patient and clear with his communication making it easier for Riria to get her head around what is being asked of her in regards to her physics lessons and assessments.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fawkner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Matthew's School.
