Throughout my tertiary studies, I have found that the key to learning anything is finding the point of interest for a person and developing that area so that the subject as a whole becomes enjoyable. For any student, progress will naturally vary and giving them that support and encouragement to persevere and overcome hurdles in their learning is,…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to help them build their confidence by allowing them to feel supported in a safe space, providing clear guidance for content as well as learning habits and inspiring a desire to learn. I believe that my strengths as a tutor lie in my compassion and ability to relate to others. As…

A tutor should motivate their student to strive for the best while remembering that every student is different and using different methods to comply with the needs of the students in order to help their student in the most effective way. In order to achieve this, the tutor needs to build a genuine and strong relationship with their students to…

I believe that a tutor needs to communicate with the student about their needs. I think that if the student and the tutor communicate well and both parties understand each other, then it will help the student tremendously. They will be willing to ask questions and participate during the lesson. I am an approachable person. I feel like my passion…

A tutor should be dedicated to his job, which is to facilitate his student to learn things in a easy and practical manner. Learning should not be boring, instead should be fun. Besides that tutor should be friendly to the student and have patience to make them understand the things that he delivers. I am a person who can teach any type of students…

Allowing students to become independent thinkers and restorning their self confidence is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. This means while you guide them in filling gaps in knowledge and breaking down difficult concepts, the tutor is able to build these fundamental skills in the student. In instilling these skills, I…

Extending beyond the scope of just being a tutor at set times is key for a student’s confidence and rapport building. Knowing they can contact me outside contact hours for small things here and there encourages them to strive to get the most out of their tutoring experience and get better results, for me, for them and for their parents.…

As a tutor, it is important not to be restrictive in your approach and to have flexibility. Being able to personalise your approach, trying out different ways of teaching and altering it to suit the student is necessary to make them feel more at ease when learning as well as bringing out the best in them. Rather than students catering to us, we…

I think the most important thing a tutor should do is understand the learning pattern and style of the student. Every student learns differently, simply using one method is not enough. As I try to see, I try to understand how different students learn and understand different content. Through the process, i try to find what is the most optimal way…

Inside Ferny CreekTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Daniel worked on multiplying larger numbers and using area and perimeter, then later focused on times tables fluency, fractions (including adding and simplifying), and reading coordinates on maps.

Year 8 student Vien tackled algebraic skills such as expanding and factorising expressions along with combining like terms, while also practicing substitution in algebraic evaluation.

For Year 10, Tanya revised linear relations—plotting graphs from equations—and strengthened understanding of the turning point form for parabolic graphs.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, when revising algebra and indices, hesitated to use unfamiliar methods and often defaulted to memorized rules—"she still needs time to understand how to simplify surds," a tutor noted, which meant her written working was patchy and she skipped showing key steps.

In Year 10 English, one student rushed sentence construction during essay planning; as observed, "still needs to practice slowing down when constructing sentences."

Meanwhile, a senior maths student sometimes prioritized easier questions in revision sessions rather than tackling new graph types or exam-style problems, leaving complex applications less practiced by the end of each lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Ferny Creek tutor noticed a real shift in Marni, a Year 10 student who previously struggled to see her mistakes—she's now able to pinpoint exactly where she went wrong in linear algebra and self-corrects during lessons.

In another session, Sophia, also in high school, showed new consistency by working through increasingly tough equations with fewer errors and started double-checking her steps without prompting.

Meanwhile, Daniel in Year 5 has become much more willing to try challenging maths problems; last week he finished a set independently of multi-digit multiplication questions for the first time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Please be advised that I would like to cease the tutoring services of your company. My boy has greatly benefited from the tutoring of Robin who has shown great patience, ability and caring. I did inform Robin last night that I was not continuing with tutoring as I feel Liam is now back on the Maths track. If I need further assistance, I'll give you a call. Thanks (especially to Robin).

Yes, Lauren is fantastic!! Jesse is actually enjoying the work and doing Lauren's set homework (and it's the holidays)! Thank you so much!

thanks for your enquiry.  Isabella is enjoying her time with Manisha and the topics they are covering are all starting to sink in.  Isabella likes they way Manisha explains things to her and feels comfortable in asking questions. Manisha seems like a very capable person and I like her professional manner in all things.  At end of each lesson, she runs through with me what has been covered and leaves Isabella with some tips and exercises to go over during the week. I am pleased with how things are progressing and will continue until Isabella feels like she is at a place where she no longer requires assistance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belgrave Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ferny Creek Primary School.
