On top of efficiently solving problems, a chemistry tutor should be able to explain to the students why it is that they are doing what they are doing. A tutor should explain why are they studying a particular topic in mathematics and what is its application. Finally, a tutor should be able to make the student enjoy what they are doing and make…

The most important things a chemistry tutor can do for a student is help inspire students to love learning, gain knowledge in various fields and learn how that knowledge can be applied in the real world, so that students gain an appreciation for education. Education is much more than just getting good grades, it is about learning how the knowledge…

The most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for a student is to be a good listener and understand what is student’s first priority. As an OP 1 receiver, based on my past experience, breaking down assignment criteria to meet the requirements and interpreting the concept clearly can significantly improve the student’s grade. I can…

I think the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do for their student is to be friendly, while maintaining professionalism, so that their student will not be afraid to ask for their help or to ask questions they may not have been able to ask in class. I think my strengths as a tutor include my willingness to go the extra mile, including…

Cater to their individual needs - some people fall behind in school not because they are "less intelligent", but because of the "one shoe fits all" approach followed by many of our schools. It is important distinguish each person as an individual learner, and adjust accordingly. I also strongly believe in comprehension over memorisation.…

I believe the most important thing a chemistry tutor can do is to make the subject matter enjoyable for students. 1. I believe my strengths would be being able to empathise with students, having a positive attitude towards learning, teaching and my subject, I have excellent communication skills and I'm patient and tolerant. 2. While I was a peer…

I think the main role of a chemistry tutor is encouraging confidence in their students. I have found that most of the time my students know the answer, they're just too afraid to say it. Or they may be on the right track and need a little guidance to fully understand a concept, making problem solving skills another thing that I try to pass on to…

Tutoring one-on-one as opposed to teaching to a group allows a much more tailored approach to an indivudal student. I'm told by my ex-students that I am very patient and…

A tutor must be patient and listen to how the student feels and explains their material. Without this we can't understand where the gaps are in the students knowledge OR whether they really do understand, but just in a different way. I think a common misconception about a chemistry tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The…

In the teaching phase, student-focused teaching would be my method of teaching, which is to discover what the students need instead of dumping knowledge, whilst showing respect and understanding. When a student raises concerns about a question, which I assume in maths and sciences usually composites of concepts from multiple areas of study, I…

Acoording to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is make a positive impact on his life by not forcing the society standards for learning and growing as every child has a different mind and way of approach to things around them. A tutor is one of the best person who can analyse this and make learning a creative activity instead…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is relate to their learning. Imparting an enjoyment of learning something new. I am only with the student for a short time compared to their time in school, so increasing intrinsic motivation to learn has a much greater effect in the long run, as well as decreasing the chance of burnout due to stress in the higher grades. Inside Ferny GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily focused on division and multiplication using single-digit numbers, practicing with a mix of word problems and number sentences.

In Year 10, Jack worked through trigonometric identities to solve equations and also completed exercises involving basic matrix operations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily explored vectors by calculating scalar projections and dot products, applying these to questions about magnitude and angles.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived without books or materials, so the session started with searching for resources instead of learning.

In Year 12 Specialist Maths, notes lacked detail and context—one tutor observed, "despite having significantly more notes than before, these notes lacked context and detail," making revision confusing before tests.

A younger student (Year 3) repeatedly counted on fingers for basic addition and became frustrated during division tasks; this slowed progress and reduced confidence mid-lesson.

For one senior assignment, no new work had been completed a week out from deadline, leaving little time to seek feedback or refine responses.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Ferny Grove recently noticed some genuine shifts: a Year 11 student who previously avoided speaking up began actively asking questions and even brought a notebook filled with detailed notes—something he'd never done before.

In a Year 7 session, the student arrived prepared with specific class questions and tackled her assignment independently, where she used to wait for step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, one primary student who had always counted on fingers is now solving base-10 addition problems mentally without prompting. Last week, that same student finished all ten problems without needing to stop for help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I am very happy with my son's tutor so far. We have only had 2 sessions & already my son is doing his homework after school everyday, without being asked. He also is impressing his tutor with his knowledge. They both relate with each other & I can see good things for my son's future.

I think Molly is really getting a lot out of the sessions and a lot of support. I think that she is also a good role model for Molly.

Michelle is awesome and has taught me so much in a short amount of time. She never doubts my level of ability and is always encouraging me to go above and beyond. Her knowledge of specific maths topics is just out of this world. You guys have one awesome lady on your hands!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Arana Hills Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ferny Grove State School.
