To build a student’s confidence in the subject is to solve half of their problems for them. I think the most important things a tutor can do are to create a supportive, encouraging environment and to build the student's confidence. It’s essential to make sure the student feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes because that’s…

Positive reinforcement is very important. As mentioned, tutoring the students through the small digestible bits and giving them reaffirmation along the journey is very important in establishing confidence on which we can build on. I am very patient with students and tailor my approach to the students depending on how receptive they are to…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, explain concepts in a way they understand, and create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions. It’s not just about helping with the subject, but also encouraging them to believe in their abilities. My strengths as a tutor are…

To be responsive and adaptable, so whenever the student needs help I should be able to help him I did math in France in Preparatory Classes, during that time I discovered how important the way the teacher/ tutor explains, helps you to understand ! So I’ll always try to find a solution to explain in another way if…

The tutor's aim should be to develop cognitive, analytical and imaginative capabilities so that the student learns how to think and face challenges. The most important thing a tutor can do is to show real life examples or threads that the student can relate to while learning new concepts. The learning in such an approach will lead to a properly spun network of knowledge with related real-life examples which will be easier to recollect for the student. And always make sure to feed what the…

Personally, I believe the most important things a tutor can do is being fully aware of the student's experience so that the tutor can adapt their own teaching styles and interactions in order to best support the student. This not only contributes to the process of learning content, but also to the wellbeing of the student under tutelage as…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill confidence in them and encourage them to be determined. I believe I am articulate. I explain…

Let them know that struggle is okay, and not being amazing at something is not a characteristic, but just a hurdle, which can be worked upon by the both of us. I'm dangerously patient. The process of learning is what may vary from person to person. My core strength would be the ability to explain any concept, no matter how complex. I can break it down to simple bits…

As a tutor, I feel the ultimate goal is to benefit the student to become an independent and confident learner. Mostly, students see their tutors as role models, so it’s very important to keep ourselves updated and supportive throughout and be ready to reach out to them academically and as a friend whenever in need. To conclude, having confidence…

Tutors should not immediately give students what they want. Providing answers is the easy path for both tutors and students, but then the solutions will always be mine, not the student's. I am not going to simply give them fish; I will teach them how to fish. I have varied experience, not just in, not only in the education sector but also in a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be kind and patient with a student. Tutoring can be frustrating but a tutor must never make their student feel bad or insecure even when they themselves are a bit agitated. I consider creating a positive and supportive learning atmosphere as paramount for a tutor. Beyond academic assistance, it involves nurturing confidence, offering constructive feedback, and acknowledging achievements. Tailoring teaching methods to accommodate individual learning styles is equally vital. Effective communication, coupled with active…

Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
