I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to first understand the student's current level and their learning goals. This helps in preparing tailored lessons that cater to their specific needs. It's crucial to recognize the student's learning pace and strengths, and to adapt teaching methods accordingly, whether they…

My strength as a tutor is I understand math can be…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student isn't to remove the obstacles that hold them back, but to convince them that they can remove them themselves. I am good at adapting how I explain things. One of my issues with many of my teachers was that they would only teach their material in one way, the issue of teaching a whole class…

To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. The main objective is to help the student to gain confidence about a subject that initially seems complicated. I believe that explaining the fundamentals concepts and laws is simpler by setting examples from daily life experiences. Moreover, this approach makes physics and math more enjoyable. Studying a master in mechanical engineering provided…

A tutor's greatest contribution is to give students confidence in their upcoming studies. In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. I have sufficient experience in counseling teenagers, I am good at communicating…

In my opinion, one of the most important things a great tutor can do for a student is to increase their passion for the subject. When a student genuinely enjoys learning about a topic, they will be more motivated. When students love what they're learning, it unlocks their potential. That energy and excitement will hopefully lead to a deeper…

With one to one teaching a tutor can help a student on a deeper level than in a classroom setting, allowing them to feel they can ask about anything they're not sure on without any fear of the rest of the class judging them. Understanding how children learn on an individual basis (including factoring in neurodivergency) rather than a blanket…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is guide a student. Just watering is not enough but should help the students to grow his roots so that the student grasps the concepts not just answer some previously seen examples. I think self-taught is the most important thing that a tutor can teach a student. This is because self-taught can go with them anywhere but the tutor can not. Additionally, a tutor can not teach a student everything, so at some points, the student needs to explore themselves. I am patient and independent in studying. This is because I have been…

A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. It is our duty as these figures to not just live up to their…

There are 2 jobs of a tutor. To make the student understand what they are learning and also encourage them to do quality practice questions. I also know the importance of practicing these…

Patience and kindness. At the end of the day, I think what matters the most is not how many percentages the student's grades have risen, but more about how "healthy" the relationship between the tutor and the student is so that they can always ask for help when needed I am a persistent person and I don't give up easily. I believe my greatest…

Very happy with the way it is going thanks Gene. Benedict is a good tutor and Saf and I are both happy with her progress.
Rankin, Fitzroy North

Inside Fitzroy NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Alex worked on calculating percentage increases and decreases as well as reviewing measurement test questions to strengthen understanding.

In Year 9, Favour focused on solving simultaneous equations and applying linear graphs to word problems using real-life scenarios.

Meanwhile, Queen, also in Year 9, practised translating worded questions into linear equations and revising methods for finding gradients and graphing lines.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often avoided showing working in algebra, which led to missed sign errors and made it hard to trace mistakes—"he tried to solve in his head instead of using paper," a tutor noted.

In Year 11, one student left homework incomplete due to a busy week; as a result, they struggled to apply new concepts confidently in class.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner hesitated to ask for clarification when confused by fractions or ratios, leading to gaps that slowed progress in financial maths topics. The reluctance to vocalize reasoning during problem-solving also limited feedback opportunities.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy North tutor recently noticed Alannah begin assigning her own revision tasks before assessments and working independently—previously she'd needed more direction during sessions.

In another case, Moses in Year 7 has shifted from quietly struggling with statistics to now asking for clarification when stuck and finishing whole sets of descriptive statistics questions on his own by the end of the lesson.

For a younger student, Leon's reluctance toward long division faded after he saw he could do it easily; now he works through multi-digit multiplication and division confidently without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as North Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fitzroy North Primary School.
