The most important thing I can do for a student is to allow them to flourish in their academic pursuits and have them feel the same passion that I have in academics- instilling and inspiring in them a love of learning that will help them progress even in their professional careers. I think most importantly, a tutor must create a good learning environment for their students. We've been through high school aswell and we've seen the ups and downs. So the best thing a tutor can do is be patient and supportive and build their confidence. Even if they get a question wrong or don't understand something, we should be patient and…

Instilling confidence in them - especially when it comes to subjects like Math, students have kind of been programmed to think of it as a difficult subject and to fear it. Breaking those stereotypes, and making sure the correct resources are accessible for them to face the content with self-confidence can make a big difference in their lives in…

Do not try to impose the thought that he believes the correct solution and try to explain to the student how to arrive at the reasoning that gives the answer. I consider that I have a fairly dense knowledge in mathematics and I am able to approach problems from different perspectives to ensure that the student understands it. I am also quite…

The most important thing is NOT teaching knowledge, instead, is to give insights and inspire students. Furthermore, is not teaching student some insights on a specific problem, but in general. Make students feel comfortable. As someone who had a lot of trouble finding tutors throughout middle school and high school, teaching in a way the student can enjoy and connect to is really important, and can be the difference between seeing a subject as "the worst" to actually having fun. You must be adaptable, and change according to how each student acts since every individual is very distinct, this will help cater to their differences (such as learning speed). Must also remember to leave no one student behind and pick them up when they fail, help them learn from their mistakes. I am very considerate and patient, thus able to…

The best thing a tutor can do isn’t just teaching - it’s changing how students approach learning. A good tutor encourages students to rely on their own judgment rather than memorizing answers. This means breaking down complex ideas and encouraging critical thinking. But a lot of tutors get this wrong. Instead of helping students grasp the…

Make them enjoy a subject. as a teacher you can only do so much when it comes to teaching. you can give them all the work, call them, and pester them, but if they don't like it they will never excel in it. I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is help them work towards their goals. I like to build up their confidence towards their weakness and most importantly educate them on their learning style which is so important long term. Not only can they identify their learning style but they will adapt to a new revision method that’s most…

The most important thing I can do for a student is to build their confidence and independence in learning. To expose someone to a subject in a manner that is encouraging and complete. There are many people who were irresponsibly exposed to subjects as rigorous as computer science and mathematics, as a consequence of which they start to believe that the subject is impossible, which with the little experience I have, I have never found to be the case. A…

As a tutor, I believe it to be of utmost importance that the student does not feel helpless or lost in a certain school subject, as it is our duty to aid them as much as we can. By teaching and explaining ideas to our students with patience, it is with no doubt that our students will be able to grasp and fathom said ideas in no time. Most…

the most important thing a tutor can do is to be understanding. People learn at different paces and ways, you have to understand and connect with your student. Do not berate them and always encourage them. While I don't have any experience as a formal tutor, I believe you should be understanding and welcoming. By this I mean, that you should…

Inside Forest LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake worked on recognising fractions using the Fraction Run game and completed reading comprehension activities on Thunder and Lightning, as well as vertical algorithms for maths.

Year 8 focused on algebra with lessons covering adding and subtracting algebraic fractions, factorisation, and contextual problem solving using equations.

For Year 5, Aditi practised imaginative story writing by building a story arc in her short story "Turkey Head" and strengthened grammar skills through tense revision and vocabulary extension games.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student was reluctant to attempt persuasive writing, needing encouragement to start, and often hesitated with challenging maths reasoning tasks—"he doubted his ability and was slow to begin," noted a tutor.

In Year 7 maths, one student's distraction with online features like BitPaper tabs led to unfinished algorithms and interruptions in focus.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student tackling algebra sometimes avoided self-editing, leaving errors uncorrected and missing feedback opportunities.

For a senior (Year 11) preparing for exams, over-reliance on calculators slowed manual calculation speed during factorization drills; this made timed practice less effective and increased anxiety under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Forest Lodge noticed that a Year 9 student who used to procrastinate now attempts answers straight away, even when unsure—showing more initiative and less hesitation than before.

In another session, a Year 11 student who often struggled to focus was able to finish all their assigned homework without reminders and even asked for extra practice questions on topics they'd previously avoided.

For a younger learner in Year 4, using a visible "to-do" list helped him independently organise his tasks and move from one activity to the next with much less prompting than earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Forest Lodge Public School.
