Be outgoing. The worst thing is for a student to be scared to ask for help because they feel embarrassed. A great tutor has to focus on creating an open environment that allows this communcation Being able to adapt my teaching methods in accordance with the student. I think, the main part is understanding. Tutor should help students in understanding of the concepts and their purpose. Secondly, tutor should be understanding, so that he/she serves students according to their needs as different students have different ways of visualising things. Thirdly, tutor should help in planning of the subject so that…

Making learning easy and creating an atmosphere for students to learn through experience, is very important to me. Math seems to be a challenging topic however, creating lots of simple daily examples, can help students to learn in a creative way. I am patient and I can handle difficult situations. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to instil confidence. A tutor should promote a genuine interest in a subject, ultimately empowering students to become independent and effective learners. They can do this by promoting critical thinking and providing constructive feedback. Given my experience with tutoring, I believe my…

The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. Finding the right teaching style for that kid and teaching as such will make the kid more involved into the subject and makes learning fun. I am a very good observer and an active listener. I make sure I tend…

The most important thing for a tutor is that they explicitly explain concepts to a student. This should be done in a way that makes the most intuitive sense to the student. Also, for me, it is essential that a tutor, as well as teaching students, teaches them how to study by themselves and how to teach themselves. This should be done by providing…

Some of the concepts can be challenging for a student. It is important for the tutor to explain it in a simple way and make the student understand and also making learning fun at the same time. I am personally good at explaining a difficult concept in a simple manner through examples. When tutoring I am really patient and want the student to…

To create a supportive, encouraging environment where they feel safe to make mistakes and grow. Human connection is the foundation of effective learning. In a world flooded with online resources and AI-driven tools, what students often lack isn't access to information, but meaningful guidance. Tutors bring the human element back into learning by…

I believe that a tutor must be able to provide the students with what they need. This means assessing the student's abilities and determining key weaknesses. Since not all students are the same, a successful tutor must be able to decide strategies that are suited for each individual student. I am adaptable and resourceful, so I can adjust myself…

I believe a tutor should always be reliable, punctual, patient, kind, and supportive - as this creates a safe learning environment for all students. I am newly graduated, meaning I still recall all the emotions and stresses of high school, and know the content and structure of various subjects extremely well. I excelled at my own school in English…

It is important that I responsibly and reliably ensure that a student can turn to me for help apart from their school teachers/parents. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is aid them in being confident enough to always attempt a problem. A great tutor helps a student to put aside the "oh no, I don't know what to do" thought or feeling and and least try to break the problem into something they do know how to do. My strengths as a tutor come in my genuine passion…

Create a comfortable, relaxed environment to learn and ask questions. Improve confidence: many students don't know what they're capable of, and just need the self-belief to show it off. Be able to react to a student's needs as they develop and progress in order to continue learning as efficiently as possible. I believe I am relatable and good…

I think enthusiasm is important - I have found in my own studies that when someone isn't enthusiastic about what they are teaching, it can easily dampen one's own ability to take on information. As i mentioned, being patient and encouraging is key to making students feel confident in their learning. Finally, being organised so that when the lesson…

Inside Forest LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake worked on recognising fractions using the Fraction Run game and completed reading comprehension activities on Thunder and Lightning, as well as vertical algorithms for maths.

Year 8 focused on algebra with lessons covering adding and subtracting algebraic fractions, factorisation, and contextual problem solving using equations.

For Year 5, Aditi practised imaginative story writing by building a story arc in her short story "Turkey Head" and strengthened grammar skills through tense revision and vocabulary extension games.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student was reluctant to attempt persuasive writing, needing encouragement to start, and often hesitated with challenging maths reasoning tasks—"he doubted his ability and was slow to begin," noted a tutor.

In Year 7 maths, one student's distraction with online features like BitPaper tabs led to unfinished algorithms and interruptions in focus.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student tackling algebra sometimes avoided self-editing, leaving errors uncorrected and missing feedback opportunities.

For a senior (Year 11) preparing for exams, over-reliance on calculators slowed manual calculation speed during factorization drills; this made timed practice less effective and increased anxiety under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Forest Lodge noticed that a Year 9 student who used to procrastinate now attempts answers straight away, even when unsure—showing more initiative and less hesitation than before.

In another session, a Year 11 student who often struggled to focus was able to finish all their assigned homework without reminders and even asked for extra practice questions on topics they'd previously avoided.

For a younger learner in Year 4, using a visible "to-do" list helped him independently organise his tasks and move from one activity to the next with much less prompting than earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Forest Lodge Public School.
