The most important things a tutor can do for a student include being able to discern where the problem is and working together to find a proper solution. Moreover, a tutor is someone who a student should be able to fully rely on when support in school is not available, they provide reassurance. I believe my strengths as a tutor are empathy and…

I realised that the real challenge often isn't the students' abilities but their engagement with the content. My goal as a tutor is to approach material proactively, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to ask 'why?' and 'how?' instead of passively accepting information at face value. I believe in creating an environment where students feel…

The best thing a tutor can do for a student is affirm their self-worth as a learner and as an individual. It can be frustrating not being able to figure something out, but it becomes a lot less daunting without extreme expectations. I think my strengths as a tutor lie in my patience and my creativity. It's certainly not an easy task learning…

Help them enjoy learning. The role of a tutor should be to engage the student and make the learning process fun, encouraging them to put more effort into their learning, consequently improving their results. As well as this, it is vital that a tutor guide the student to a solution rather than simply giving them the answer, allowing them to…

A tutor can induce confidence about the right things a student is supposed to know. The tutor's major role is to make the student clearly understand concepts of subjects without a thing such as doubt in their mind. The most important thing a math tutor can do for a student is help them build confidence. From my experience, most students understand math but are afraid of it. Being scared of math makes it more likely for students to make mistakes. My HSC maths teacher used to say that to be able to understand mathematics, one must understand the basics of it…

Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. The most important thing is to make sure that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed with their workload, and instead has fun (or at least doesn't detest the time spent) while studying. In this regard, the tutor has to make the content interesting and tailor it to each individual if it's one-on-one. I'm very patient in explaining concepts. I also…

Another important…

Inside Forest LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake worked on recognising fractions using the Fraction Run game and completed reading comprehension activities on Thunder and Lightning, as well as vertical algorithms for maths.

Year 8 focused on algebra with lessons covering adding and subtracting algebraic fractions, factorisation, and contextual problem solving using equations.

For Year 5, Aditi practised imaginative story writing by building a story arc in her short story "Turkey Head" and strengthened grammar skills through tense revision and vocabulary extension games.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student was reluctant to attempt persuasive writing, needing encouragement to start, and often hesitated with challenging maths reasoning tasks—"he doubted his ability and was slow to begin," noted a tutor.

In Year 7 maths, one student's distraction with online features like BitPaper tabs led to unfinished algorithms and interruptions in focus.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student tackling algebra sometimes avoided self-editing, leaving errors uncorrected and missing feedback opportunities.

For a senior (Year 11) preparing for exams, over-reliance on calculators slowed manual calculation speed during factorization drills; this made timed practice less effective and increased anxiety under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Forest Lodge noticed that a Year 9 student who used to procrastinate now attempts answers straight away, even when unsure—showing more initiative and less hesitation than before.

In another session, a Year 11 student who often struggled to focus was able to finish all their assigned homework without reminders and even asked for extra practice questions on topics they'd previously avoided.

For a younger learner in Year 4, using a visible "to-do" list helped him independently organise his tasks and move from one activity to the next with much less prompting than earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Forest Lodge Public School.
