I think the most important thing that tutor can do is to build confidence in student to solve any kind of problem in the exam. This can be only done when they are through with the formulas, concepts and it's applications. I think making clear understanding about the concepts is my strength as a tutor. I believe if anyone clearly knows the concepts…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe in the student’s ability and to build their confidence in themselves and their academic ability. To do this, a tutor should tailor their teaching approach to every student. Another important thing tutors can do for their students is to guide the student to develop…

To me, teaching is not just about passing the knowledge to students, help them to build an effective learning pattern would be beneficial for them forever and not just limited to math. The most important thing should be that a tutor treats their student with equal respect. Just because someone's older or further ahead in life doesn't mean that they command more respect. Everyone should be treated equally and with mutual respect. I also think the sessions should be made fun, the joy of learning should be expressed through the…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is bring a genuine enjoyment for the subject. Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

Inside GardenvaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nikki focused on solving real-world division problems like calculating cost per kilogram and interpreting results in full sentences, as well as practising key elements of showing working and reasoning.

Year 8 student Celia worked through index laws using examples to solidify understanding, and revised algebraic equations ahead of her test.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Bonnie tackled trigonometry topics including sin/cos/tan ratios and the Pythagoras theorem, with extra attention on applying formulas to a variety of question types.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's working was repeatedly erased instead of crossed out during scientific notation tasks—"This will waste a lot of time especially during tests," as noted by the tutor.

In Year 11, missing key details in text-heavy exam questions led to confusion when indirect information was required, not just direct calculations.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student struggled to keep their answers organized in multi-step fraction problems; they tended to panic when timed and lost track of steps.

For a senior English essay, lack of planning made it hard for ideas to flow smoothly between paragraphs, leaving arguments disconnected.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Gardenvale noticed a big change with Celia, a high school student who used to hesitate when faced with new algebraic laws—now she's not only picking them up quickly but also applying them independently during sessions.

In another case, Bonnie, also in high school, showed real initiative by pinpointing which maths topics she struggled with before her exam and then confidently using her CAS calculator to tackle those questions on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently surprised her tutor by clearly writing down every division question she found confusing instead of skipping them, making it easier to review and master those tricky spots together.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Leibler Yavneh College.
