The best thing a tutor can do is to remove the fear within the students of asking even the simplest questions. Also to make them feel connected with the tutor and make the study enjoyable and comfortable. I make a good rapport with the student very quickly. My method explanations are easy to understand. I focus more on basic concepts. I never get…

The single most important aspect for a tutor is to be able to keep the student's attention; losing their focus implicates the loss of any further progress in the topic at hand and their faith in how much you can help them as a mentor. Maintaining their concentration throughout the duration of the session, while tiring at times, pays off. I believe…

Build up confidence to believe that the respective student can succeed. Confidence is the most important thing that a student should have. Without having confidence student will not commit to do studies. I think i can understand students very well. Whether they understand or not can be observed by their actions. So when I understand that they have…

Be there for them all the time. If they're at home and I'm not there being able to send me a message for help is the best thing a tutor can do for a student I'm often relatable to most people and therefore they get the most out of…

Melissa is an excellent tutor who has already created a great rapporr with Poppy. She explains concepts clearly and relates them to real life experiences which provide a greater depth of understanding. We highly recommend Melissa as a tutor.

Inside GeelongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Eliz revised subtraction and decimals, practised some chance questions, and was introduced to Roman numerals using simple exercises.

In Year 8, Chloe worked through test corrections on fractions—focusing on simplifying and converting between mixed and improper forms—and wrote a descriptive essay analysing film characters for English.

For Year 10, Olivia explored quadratic equations in mathematics and discussed mean, median, mode, and range when interpreting line graphs in statistics.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student struggled with remembering formulas and "needed to pause mid-problem to look them up," which slowed down progress in multi-step algebra questions.

A Year 11 student relied heavily on the calculator during trigonometry, skipping manual checks and missing opportunities to catch entry errors—"he just pressed buttons without thinking through each step."

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner's division work showed confusion over order of operations; forgetting multiplication tables made factor questions drag on.

In English (Year 7), another avoided revising spelling errors after feedback, so repeated mistakes crept into her next essay draft.

Recent Achievements

One Geelong tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who had previously hesitated to attempt challenging differentiation problems now independently solve several chain rule questions without prompting.

In a separate high school session, a Year 9 student—who used to avoid participating in group discussions—began sharing her ideas more openly during English analysis, backing up her points with evidence from the text.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who often guessed at answers in maths started pausing to apply tips she'd learned before working through each arithmetic problem and completed an entire set of practice questions with only minimal corrections needed.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We have been very happy with Kayla's tutoring! Charlie said he was the best prepared he had ever been before a Maths test. He got 64/67 for the knowledge part (previous test was 19/65!). His problem solving, while not fantastic, improved, and his communication had also greatly improved. We are pleased that he ended up with a pass after the previous test, and really I think he will only get better now. Charlie reports that she explains things really well to him which is fantastic.

Thank-you!  Chelsea & Jarrod, are very happy with Vafa, and find her very easy to get on with, the kids are feeling very comfortable!! I am very pleased.

Mihika is doing very well with both Lachlan and Courtney, they are building up a rapport together and their exam results have been improved. It certainly has boosted their confidence and we they like their tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Geelong City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's School.
