As a tutor, if I have other sudden commitments which require my attention, it is my responsibility to let the parents or…

I think spending time to change your whole approach of teaching because one of your student is unable to understand the whole content. Being honest and flexible is very important things a tutor can have. Flexible, patient, good listener and helping nature. Being flexible about the teaching approach because every individual has different way of…

First and foremost, for the student to improve his/her results in school. And beyond that, to get them to enjoy what they're doing (at least somewhat) - and push them into thinking creatively and originally. Also important, is to encourage and emphasize how what they're learning, will be relevant and useful in their day-to-day lives. I feel that…

In my opinion, as a tutor, it is very important to cherish the students as they progressed, acknowledging their work and encourage them to try to do with their full potential. Besides, it is important to have an understanding of their best way of learning, and encourage them to question in their learning. Furthermore, awareness of their wellbeing…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do is to listen to student and learn where he/she has doubts or needs help. Another important thing for a tutor is to encourage and give positive reinforcement to a student which helps the student gain confidence and in turn helps him to study better(especially for a tough subject). I have excellent…

Giving them encouragement and prompting them to keep trying. Emphasizing repetition is very important. It builds a 'keep trying' attitude in the students that will carry them through school and further on in their lives. I am patient with students. I make an effort to be calm, and try different ways of explaining concepts/ideas/techniques so that…

The tutor's objective is not simply to relay information to a student in a bland or dry manner, but rather to establish a solid foundation and understanding for the students - to devise a teaching method that works best. The objective is for the student to learn in the most efficient and enjoyable manner. I am a University lecturer and a senior…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate and assess their situation and help them navigate through the problems they are facing. Secondly, I'd say is to impart knowledge to the student as this is his/her base and thus it needs to be strengthened and help them realize their dreams and guide them to it. One of my…

Understanding the student by listening carefully to them is important so you know the best way to help them with any problems. Having faith and trust in a student is also very important and enables them to build self confidence and trust within themselves and their ability to solve problems. Firstly, the most important thing that a tutor should do is build up confidence in their kids that they have the potential to achieve their goals and are destined for the best. This instantly boosts up the kids for striving for accuracy and their dreams. Secondly, a tutor should never be a demotivator in any manner. This is important as any…

Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

Teaching the content and helping them fully grasp it, rather than doing it for them. I find that a lot of subjects have a particular rhythm to them; although some require rote learning (like particular concepts, especially within math), there are always patterns that can be identified so that students achieve their very best. For example: Stage 2…

Inside GillmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia focused on mastering number properties and operations, working through textbook problems in preparation for her upcoming maths test.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled calculus concepts by solving first derivative questions using differentiation rules from Chapter 2 of his textbook and completed multiple practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Sienna reviewed applications of integration by going through practice questions to prepare for her assessment, ensuring she could confidently find areas under curves and solve applied problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student left work until the last minute, making it hard to finish a research task thoughtfully; "Jaeda does get 'bored' if she doesn't find the information straight away," her tutor noted, so reading for key facts was rushed and incomplete.

In Year 8 Maths, another student lost their homework sheet and had not completed set questions—when asked about arithmetic basics, gaps appeared that slowed progress on new material.

For one primary learner, missing library books and distraction led to careless spelling errors during reading time, with extra mistakes slipping through unchecked.

Recent Achievements

One Gillman tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Sienna, began preparing questions in advance for each session—something she hadn't done before—which helped her pinpoint and address gaps in her maths understanding.

In Year 10 English, Jaeda shifted from being quiet during lessons to actively offering suggestions for improving her narrative writing, even taking the lead on revising sections herself.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who used to hesitate when unsure about spelling started correcting mistakes independently after reviewing them with the tutor and now brings in her homework every week.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

The tutoring with my son Jordan and Remy is going really well things he feels that the tutoring is beneficial and that he is getting a better understanding of the topics. He has the big exam tomorrow but Remy has been very helpful in getting him prepared and after the exam she has identified areas that Jordan needs to work on which is great.

I would just like to say that Reagan was very professional and very reliable.   He was well suited to my daughter for tutoring. She felt very comfortable with him and she did demonstrate  growth with her math. I would definitely recommend Reagan to other people.  The only other thing is that I regret not having done it sooner.

Just wanted to let you know that we have been super happy with Ben as a tutor for Callum.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as The Parks Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's School.
