Rather than making the subject more troublesome for the student, a tutor must help them realize how easily the same could be studied using small tips and making it more enjoyable. Helping out with their doubts, providing sufficient extra materials, and small tips to remember among others, are important things that a tutor could help with.…

I see no student a failure, and I will take their failure as my own. The most quintessential thing any tutor can do is adapt to the student's way of thinking and guide them to success. When you help others, you grow in the process. There is no important thing a tutor can do for a student apart from working on themselves to aid the student better…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their ability to learn and think independently. One of my favourite quotes is "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime." Teaching students how to learn not only helps them to do well in their exams, but…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to build the student’s confidence, foster a genuine understanding of the subject, and create a supportive environment for learning. It’s not just about helping them get the right answers, but about teaching them how to think critically and approach problems independently. A good tutor also…

Being patient and having empathy is important in tutoring. This way, the tutor is able to understand what the student is feeling, and understand what is the best way to learn for them. I think my strength in tutoring is the sense of empathy that i am able to show. I believe that the tutor needs to be able to understand the student’s best…

Inside GiralangTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sam worked on converting measurements between units like metres and litres, then practiced algebra skills such as using pronumerals and indices.

In Year 9, Angus revised factorising quadratic equations with the sum-product method and began solving quadratics using both substitution and elimination techniques.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Atiana focused on exponential and logarithmic functions, including graphing these functions to deepen her understanding of their properties.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion has been an ongoing issue for a Year 6 student; recent notes repeatedly highlight that work is not being submitted, which is starting to impact retention of maths and English skills.

In a senior secondary setting, one Year 11 student was observed "rushing through" trigonometry test questions—leading to repeated careless errors that would have been caught with slower, more methodical checking.

Another high school student hesitated to write down algebra steps, jumping straight to answers but struggling to explain reasoning when asked. This left gaps in working that made reviewing mistakes harder during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Giralang recently saw a Year 10 student move from struggling with non-monic quadratics to confidently factorising them after some patient review, even building a personalised cheat sheet for revision.

Another high schooler, who used to rush through algebra questions and miss steps, is now back-checking each solution and catching small mistakes on her own—something she rarely did before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student has begun using the "thinking aloud" technique while tackling tricky geometry problems, which helped her independently spot where she'd made an error and correct it without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Belconnen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Giralang Primary School.
